Chinese Visiting Students

31 Chinese students and four teachers from our sister school in Yi Wu, China, came to visit our school for a week in early August 2019.

The cold weather didn’t dampen our enthusastism to welcome our overseas visitors. Majority of the time Chinese students attended senior classes and worked with our students on various projects. Paul and Luke planned very interesting and wonderful programs for students to mingle and work together. It is great to see our students enjoy the Chinese visitors. Aussie and Chinese students helped each other and made friends. Students also played some fun sports games to work on teamwork and cooperation.

During their visit, the school organized special Art and PE classes for them to experience some hands-on activities. They have produced some amazing art works. They have learnt to kick Aussie footy. At the first they couldn’t work out why the ball won’t go where they want it to go.

The school also organised for the Australian and Chinese students to go to the Werribee Zoo and they had great fun time while experiencing all types of wildlife.

Thank you for all classroom teachers who accommodated and made the Chinese students welcome.

Thank you for everyone for supporting the very first Chinese program at Dohertys Creek College and made it a huge success.

Physical Education

Over the last week in Physical Education, we have started our new topic where we have been learning about healthy and active living.

Across P-2 we have been discussing and how we feel after being active. Students have described themselves as feeling a range of things including; puffed, out of breath, thirsty, hot & sweaty, heart beating fast, energetic, excited, ready to take on the next activity, fit, powerful and strong. Students are also starting to explore how some activities use only a small amount of energy and some use a lot of energy!

In the upper year levels, 3-6, we have looked at the National Physical Activity Guidelines for ages 5-17 and discovered that children should be participating in 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day! We learnt the difference between moderate and vigorous physical activity through participating in different types of activities. Student have also been tasked with tracking their own physical activity for a week using an activity log and we will look at analysing them once complete.

On Monday at assembly, Ian and the team from Live Well Medical Clinic launched the Step Awareness Program! This is a great way for students and families to get active and work together towards moving towards or maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle, as well as linking in with our topic in PE. A brisk walk that works up a bit of a sweat helps students to meet the National Physical Activity Guidelines, but also helps adults to meet the guidelines for themselves too!

Please see Ian’s compass post for more information about the Step Awareness Program.
