Saturday Sport

Many thanks for your cooperation in making sure we had a smooth return to ISA Summer Sport and NSTA tennis last weekend.  All boys were well attired and behaved and your assistance with ensuring we operated in a COVID-safe manner was very much appreciated.

Please ensure you access the NSW QR Code sign-in system whenever you are at College venues.  The same will apply to all ISA and NSTA facilities.

I encourage you all to make sure you have downloaded the College App.  This is where COVID protocol updates for all our competition schools will be posted. Expect an update on a Friday afternoon when everyone has confirmed their protocols for the weekend.

I look forward to catching up with you throughout the term.

Mr Matt Stearn - Senior School Sportsmaster

2021 ISA Round 1 – 1st XI (10/180) defeated by St Patrick’s College (2/163) @ Breen Oval (rain affected)

Round 1 of the ISA Competition saw the 1st XI away at Strathfield on a day where rain came and went.

Having been sent into bat, the opening pair of Joe Colgan (73) and Joel Austin (35) put on an even 100 run partnership in 26 overs. Joe scored runs all around the wicket, while Joel played a very supporting role. The partnership featured aggressive running between the wickets. A clump of wickets fell as the run rate decreased and despite some useful cameos from Riley Kennedy (16) and 1st XI debutant Keelan Mendel (18 - whose first two scoring strokes were sixes!), the team was bowled out for 180 in the 49th over.

More rain meant a reduced target of 163 off 45 overs. Two run outs placed the home side under pressure at 2 for 33. The next two batsmen, however, played very well and there were very few chances created by the 1st XI bowlers and fielders for the remainder of the afternoon. The team is looking to bounce back immediately at Oxford Falls this weekend.

CIS and ISA Representative Trials

Congratulations to Keelan Mendel (1st XI) and Angus McConnell (2nd XI) who have been selected by the ISA to trial for the CIS U16 Representative Team.

Congratulations to Joe Colgan (1st XI), Liam Kinna (1st XI), Nick Ward (1st XI) and Liam Chang (1st XI) who have been selected to trial for the ISA Representative Team.

NSTA Tennis

Enthusiasm was in the air for the first game of the Term 1 matches last Saturday. It was great to see so many new players, 17 in total from the Junior School take up tennis. For many of these players it was their first time playing competition tennis. Thanks must be given to: Richard Gauci, Lucas Durey, Jamie Leong, Alex Vaccher and Aiden Parsons who volunteered to come and help out with umpiring. The help that these boys gave the Junior boys was invaluable.

In our Green Ball Division Justin Lee and Lucas Willems (SPX 26), Aidan Lam and Kayden Foo (SPX 28) and Ryan Chung and Daniel Lenehan all had a cracker start winning all three sets to take a win for the first week. It was an exciting singles match on Court 8 between Jack Costa and Jonathon Webster with Jonathon taking the win 6-5. Will Scaiff, John Badger-Rahme and Josh Barwell (SPX 15) were hungry for the win also and victory came their way against Redlands 22 winning 18 games to 9.

The light rain at 10.00 am didn’t dampen the spirits of the players and the games went ahead as planned. A newcomer to SPX Adrian Yu teamed up with Antony Autore (SPX 8) and their combined efforts and skill saw them achieve a win 3-0 against SPX 7. Despite their best effort and although Christian Wong and Lucas Durey (SPX 12) tied in games with Redlands 15, they were just beaten by 1 set which saw them walk away, heads held high, with a loss.

Thank you everyone for remembering to follow the COVID Rules, all players and spectators signing in and hand sanitising, making it safe for everyone. Let’s pray for the continued good weather for the rest of the season.

Mrs Samantha Iwatani - NSTA Convenor
