Leadership Centre

Curriculum
Halo semuanya!
We hope you have had an enjoyable and restful weekend. We are not far from the end of the year but there is still two weeks of fun and exciting activities planned. Stay tuned!
In Writing, students have continued to focus on poetry and have spent some time analysing some excellent examples from Australia’s youngest award-winning slam poet, Solli Raphael. As a whole class and in small groups, students analysed Solli’s published pieces to explore text structure. In addition, students identified a number of literary devices used to convey meaning and critiqued the effectiveness of the author’s word choice. After analysing and annotating these mentor texts, students then began their own slam poetry piece, choosing topics that they feel passionate about. It has been impressive seeing students explore the use of rhyme, rhythm, repetition, assonance, alliteration and symbolism in their own pieces of writing. We look forward to seeing the student’s completed work.
In Mathematics, students participated in a range of engaging and hands-on activities related to volume and capacity. Within this unit, we explored the meaning of keywords related to volume and capacity and the ways in which this can be calculated in a variety of shapes, including regular and irregular prisms. Students have incorporated the use of concrete materials (nets, unifix and centicubes), visual diagrams and formulas to explore these concepts.
The VIA Character Strengths was a focus in this week’s Wellbeing session. Everyone in the Leadership Centre spent time thinking about others' character strengths. Using sticky notes, students identified the strengths in their peers and recorded specific examples of how they consistently demonstrate that strength. Students then passed on their sticky note to that person, ensuring every member of the Leadership Centre received one. The value of students providing their own peers with positive reinforcement was very clearly evident in the students faces and reactions.
Today was the Leadership Centre Planning Day where the 5/6 teachers spent time preparing for Term One of 2021. We would like to thank all the students for completing a Student Voice survey that assisted the teachers in planning fun and engaging activities in Numeracy, Literacy, Wellbeing and Guided Inquiry.
This Tuesday will see some Year 5 students present their 2021 School Captain and SRC President speeches to the whole school via Zoom with classes logging in to view a live broadcast. We look forward to seeing these students present their speeches.
Have a lovely week!
Mr Andrew Shaw, Miss Ros Walker, Mrs Cassie Brisbane, Miss Megan Campbell and Mr Hamish Burrill
