Deputy Head of College News

Mr Bruce McPhee

Who are we?

At today’s assembly, both Michael Newman and I spoke to the boys about what it means to be a Marist Man. For the vast majority of our boys, they know what it means to be “100% Marist, 100% of the time” and what it means to “act courageously”.

I know from conducting hundreds of enrolment interviews that you as parents also know what these things mean – and you actively want them for your sons.

Please know that we (teachers, heads of houses, curriculum leaders, counsellors, support staff, etc) speak with the boys constantly about their behaviour and attitude and what we expect from them.  Please also know that the partnership we share with you as our parents is vital in ensuring we graduate young men who share these values.

If you have concerns about your son’s capacity to show these values in action, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.  If you share information with us as a means of working in partnership, we can talk through ways and means of supporting you and the boy/s you are growing into a young man.

Your best point of contact is your son’s head of house, or primary pastoral leader.  Also available are your son’s classroom teachers, pastoral group teachers, or other support staff whom he (or you) trusts.  These staff can support you by listening and also working with you to develop any plan of action that may be needed to then support your son.

We work regularly to ensure that the boys are wearing their uniform (socks up, shirts in, ties up, blazers and formal hats on coming to and from school, hair cut appropriately) and know that you do as well.  As an example of the above support, should you be struggling in this area, please make contact.  If the boys know we are talking and on the same page about what is acceptable, then they will be far more attentive to getting this right.  Obviously the same goes for any other behaviour, grooming, attitudinal and academic aspects you may be working on with your son.

Tuckshop Help

Working in the tuckshop is another way to connect with the College and find out a little more about the environment your son spends so much time in.

We gladly accept any and all volunteers who work in the tuckshop in either a regular or intermittent basis.

Walkathon

At today’s assembly, we launched this year’s walkathon through a “Kath and Kel” style speed walking race.

All boys received a postcard with a link through which family and friends can donate to the Walkathon. All funds go to the P&F who every year look at a way to spend the money to benefit the boys.  I look forward to sharing with you more info about this in the coming weeks.

A reminder to all families that the walkathon is a compulsory event.  Families are more than welcome to join the boys on the day and to then enjoy the Battle of the Bands and the Tower Art Show as part of the day’s festivities.

Please see the Head of Students’ section for more information about expectations and prizes.
