Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

Marist hosted St Laurence’s College last Saturday for our annual Old Boys Day. This is a wonderful event in the College sporting calendar. This year we recognised the Old Boys of Marist Ashgrove, Rosalie and St Laurence’s from 1982, 1972, 1962 and 1952. It was a truly memorable day with most matches being played at home, allowing for a carnival atmosphere across rugby and football. Thank you to Ms Bethany Halpin, Ms Ellen Kassulke and the whole team behind the scenes for their organisation and management of the College events celebrating Old Boys Day.

As we reflect on Round 1 and the huge day that it was, thank you also to the following people for their tireless efforts in ensuring the day ran smoothly, Mr Callum Clark and the rest of the facilities team for preparing our wonderful fields and facilities, Ms Rebecca Jorquera and the many parents who volunteered on Saturday in the canteen, for the wonderful food and service that they provided. Thank you also to the officials, coaches and support staff for without whom we would not be able to participate. I also acknowledge the students who assisted with cleaning up the grandstand after the 1st XV match. I was with an SLC parent at the time and he commented on how impressive it was to see.

After a very disrupted preparation, we are now starting to see teams settle now and selections begin to look as they should. This is significantly later than we would like but the double cause of COVID-19 and wet weather have hampered our processes somewhat. There may still be movement at training this week, but we anticipate that selection changes after this weekend will be minimal, rewarding commitment and excellence.

Uniform

All students participating in AIC sport are required to have the correct shirt, shorts and socks. These items are available from the uniform shop. Football boots and shin pads are also required for football, boots and a mouthguard for rugby. Boys are not to wear thongs or slides on Saturdays.

For training students are encouraged to wear the Marist training shirt and the sport’s short and socks where possible. I have written in this newsletter before about the many benefits of having a uniform for training, both from a culture, team identity and also from a practical coaching perspective. As Mr McPhee has said on assembly, we are the team to beat in the AIC, lets make sure we act like it in all that we do.

It was great to see so many boys supporting the teams on Saturday. When supporting at AIC activities students are expected to change into their College uniform after they have finished playing their games.

Rugby

Marist hosted St Laurence’s College last Saturday, with almost all matches taking place at the College. Of the 24 matches against SLC, Marist won 21 of them. There was a clean sweep in Years 5, 6, 9 and 10 in a dominant day for the College. Team of the week goes to 10B for their 62-0 victory, with honourable mentions to 6C (52-0) and 2nd XV (42-5). Congratulations to all teams who were successful.

1st XV Rugby

The first round of the AIC season against St Laurence’s College on Old Boys day didn’t go the way that we had planned. SLC controlled the majority of possession and field position early on, eventually managing to score the first points of the match. The first try of the game from Marist came from our first attacking opportunity in the SLC half, which resulted in the ball being put down in the left corner by Munroe Wood. With the small amount of ball possession that we obtained in the game the forwards were successful with making metres up the field, but we still went into halftime trailing SLC. When we held possession of the ball in the opposition half, we were able to create some try-scoring opportunities in the second half with Tasman Barry barging over the line to score. A try not long after by Connor Lyons came after a Patrick Tierney line break from a short ball by number 10, Tobias Graham. The Connor Lyons try closed the score a little but SLC came away with the victory on the day. This was a disappointing loss to begin the season but we know that we will work hard on our discipline and ball retention this week in preparation for our trip to Ipswich to face St Edmund’s College this weekend.

This weekend we are away against St Edmund’s College. This will see a large number of teams playing supplementary matches so please make sure you check the team lists and draw carefully to make sure you are at the right place for your match.

Football

Marist won the day overall against St Laurence’s College with 15 wins to 6 losses and a number of draws across the day. Thank you to our opposition for providing such spirited opposition in what was another great day of football against SLC. Marist were undefeated in Years 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10 in a display that augers well for this season and the coming years. Team of the week goes to 9C who won 10-1, with honourable mentions to 10B (8-0), 10A (5-0), 9B (5-1) 8D (5-0), 7 Gold (6-0), 5A (6-2), 5B (5-0) and 5C (6-1). Well done to all the successful teams this week.

The 1st XI were unfortunately defeated 3-nil by a better opponent on the day. The boys are disappointed as they performed much better in last week’s trial and will bounce back this week at St Edmund’s. After a tense first half where Marist defended resolutely, the second half opened up more and SLC were able to capitalise on their chances much better than Marist were able to.

This weekend we are away against St Edmund’s College. This will see a large number of teams playing supplementary matches so please make sure you check the team lists and draw carefully to make sure you are at the right place for your match.

Sport Canteen

Many thanks to the more than 50 people who turned out to make the canteen a huge success last Saturday. We have a quieter week coming our way for 7 May, with the roster below:

  • Flats Canteen: Year 5, and Year 6 (if you have a home game on Saturday)
  • Grandstand Canteen: Year 7 and Year 8 (if you have a home game on Saturday).

Please put your name in the SignUp by Friday if you can get an hour done in the canteen this weekend.

14 May and 21 May are our next two big dates - and we will be asking for help from all year levels. If you know where you are going to be, it is helpful if you can start putting your name against these dates in the SignUp also.
