PDHPE Department

Term 3 Report
This term the PDHPE KLA has launched two exciting competitions for our Year 8 and Year 10 students as part of their theory units and assessment tasks.
Firstly in Year 8, the ‘Don’t be a stat, put on a hat’ skin cancer awareness competition will require students, as a part of their Harm Minimisation unit, to create an informative, creative and engaging health promotion video raising awareness of skin cancer prevention targeting teenagers. With the Cancer Council Australia stating that two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70 this task will allow the students to further explore preventative strategies and raise awareness of skin cancer.
The second competition: ‘Beat the Stig’ is being completed in conjunction with the Year 10 unit ‘Being Strong’. This competition requires the students to inquire into the issue of mental illness, especially focusing on reducing the stigma in Australian society associated with depression. Students will be required to create a resource that could be used by an organisation like Beyond Blue to raise awareness and assist society to reduce the stigma of depression.
In each competition, the five (5) tasks judged by a panel to be the most informative, creative and engaging will be awarded the following prizes:
1st Prize- $50 Rebel gift card
2nd Prize- $40 Rebel gift card
3rd Prize- $30 Rebel gift card
4th Prize- $25 Rebel gift card
5th Prize- $20 Rebel gift card
We look forward to announcing the winners of this competition and showcasing the students work in the near future.
YEAR 9 PDHPE DRUG EDUCATION TALK
This term Year 9 students have commenced a guided inquiry approach to learning for the unit Drug Education. As a way of introducing this unit of work to the students, we were very fortunate to have Mr Mark Stephenson visit the College during lesson 1 on Wednesday 20th of July to talk to the students. Mark, a local paramedic with over 20 years’ experience, provided the students with invaluable insights into the types of commonly used drugs in the Wagga area and the impacts these drugs have on the user and the wider community. Mark showed injuries sustained by people through their drug use and told engaging stories that captivated the students. Mark through his ‘lived’ experience of being a Paramedic was able to provide our student’s with a much more powerful and relevant insight into drug issues then could be conveyed in a classroom alone. We would like to sincerely thank Mark for giving up his time for the learning of our students.
YEAR 11 PDHPE FIRST AID
This term Year 11 PDHPE students have been studying their First Aid Option and as can be seen in the photos below they have been practising their skills of slings, bandaging, splinting and responding to a range of first aid situations using practical scenarios.
The following is a slideshow of our junior students engaged in practical activities this term.
We would like to sincerely thank the Owner of Snap Fitness Wagga, Paul Wray and Manager, Brooke Pettigrew for their generous donation of $5,000 to the College. The health and fitness of the younger generation is of particular concern to Paul and the money he has donated will be used to purchase additional equipment to support our students in our PDHPE and Sporting programs at the College.
