From Alice, Librarian

Last week in the library we gave feedback to the Children’s Team Leader of the City of Melbourne Libraries, Bern Nolen, on the new Munro development at Queen Victoria Market which will house the newest City of Melbourne Libraries branch. We drew and wrote down what every library needs, and what we wish libraries had, and there was some strong consensus along with some fantastic 'outside-the-box' ideas.

Everyone agreed that libraries need quiet spaces, books, and comfy places to sit. Year 2 and 3 also thought a craft area was a must, and the clever Year 3 know that every library has to have librarians!

The number one wish for the Munro library was a swimming pool, lots of them featuring very elaborate water slides and even one practical solution for keeping the books dry was to have a laminating machine to laminate your books and make them waterproof.

Everyone also wished for a playground in the outdoor space, along with somewhere to get food such as a café or vending machine. An aquarium or a library pet was another popular suggestion.

Here were some more fabulous suggestions:

  • Watermelon snack truck
  • something to make the book float to you if you couldn't find it
  • somewhere you can make your own books
  • a cool down spot when you're angry
  • fairy garden
  • a library cubby house
  • a butterfly enclosure
  • a zero gravity room
  • Auslan interpreters
  • dance studio
  • book collecting drones
  • a ball pit
  • a treehouse
  • a red carpet
