Year 7 Tennis

YEAR 7 TENNIS TEAM BLITZ- WINNERS ARE GRINNERS!

The pictures tell a million stories but the main scoop is that Wantirna College dominated the courts at the Year 7 tennis competition held this week. Players have been training up to 3 times per week from mid- February and this certainly paid off. All games played were doubles matches and some games were won, without a single point being won by the opposition.

Other games were played where points were hard fought for during long rallies. Wantirna College competed against many teams from local schools, from combined Yr7/8’s at Sherbrooke to teams from Upwey and Fairhills. I was very proud of the students from Wantirna for the humble manner in which they conducted themselves during matches, helping their opposition out with umpiring and scoring as well as playing tips. It was a pleasure to be your coach. Huge thanks goes to my Year 10 student coaches; Lachlan Posch, Jas Corless and Alan Truong who have been giving individualised training to our students at school over the past 5 weeks and were instrumental in the organisation of competition day.

Well done to everyone who competed or coached- Mrs Carolyn Parkes (Teacher Coach)

This is what students had to say;

Eric Lang- Year 7 player

Tennis was a lot of fun. My teammates and I played really well and fairly and we even taught the opposition teams how to score. When we weren't on court playing, my friends and I were trying to nutmeg each other with the tennis ball. It was really funny. Overall it was a great day and I look forward to representing the school in tennis again.

Lachlan Posch- Year 10 Coach

After being asked by Mrs Parkes to be a tennis coach for the Year 7s and 8s, I went to the first training session anxious to see the talent and potential from the students. Over time, I started to see each student individually giving them advice and correcting their mistakes. As the days went by and during each session I saw everyone progress. When I saw them get a shot in that they could never do before, they looked at me and smiled. I felt very good and happy knowing they have progressed all this way. On the 21st of March, some students played their first match of tennis ever! I could see a lot of smiles full of joy. This is what I wanted to see and I thought to myself this is how far they have come knowing all their effort and hard work had paid off. At the end of the day when we walked back to school, everyone was laughing and happy with themselves. Back at school, when we sat down to rest, Mrs Parkes and I brought back soft drink and lollies to celebrate our achievement at the end of the day. I think all students had a great day and loved the experience. This is also what I experienced and a special thanks to Mrs Parkes for organising the training and convening the competition day.
