The Library is too popular!

The Library is too popular!

If you are one of the many students who come into the library at lunchtime to read, research, play cards etc. you may be interested to know that, due to safety concerns, we will be limiting the number of students who can be in the library at any one time. This means that if there are more students than chairs we may stop more students from coming in. We will also be setting aside a few work only/silent areas. Remember that “learning is the priority and must be maximized” so priority will always be given to those who need to study/read.

Do you have a book lined up to read over the holidays?  Did you know that studies have shown that those students who don’t read during the holidays (particularly the big summer one) risk sliding backwards academically? So what can you do to make reading more enjoyable?:

  • Try reading lots of different things – magazines, brochures, comics, an on-line manga book. Not everything has to be a novel the size of a brick!
  • How about reading something non-fiction that you are interested in eg. Sports, conspiracies, food?
  • Surf the internet, reading about things you are interested in and not just search for the pictures or videos.
  • Find small times to read eg. While you are half-watching TV or while waiting for your computer to boot up.
  • Get some recommendations - ask friends / family what they are reading.
  • Lighten up with your reading. If the book isn’t for school it’s OK to skip pages or even not finish if you are not getting into it (maybe try something else instead).
  • Try something new eg. Science fiction instead of Romance. Maybe you are bored of reading because the books haven’t been challenging enough.
  • An e-book? Great for taking away on holidays if you haven’t got the room for lots of books. Remember you can get them free from your local Library or from your school library.
  • Read a book version of a story and then compare it to the movie version (tip: you almost always get more out of a story if you read the book then see the movie)
  • Try it. Many of us lose interest in reading from time to time but find when we pick a book up again we get straight back into the enjoyment of reading.

I hope these tips are useful. Below are a few recent books available from the Wantirna College Library Resource Centre, including “Lady Midnight” by Cassandra Clare (author of The Immortal)
