vcal & moreland youth movement project
community – humanity - empathy mural
Kostas Vassilacopoulos
VCAL Captain 2017
On Thursday 22 June, BSC students participated in making a visual reminder of the diverse origins of our school community. Staff and students were invited to add their thumbprint onto our Community Project Mural which features a world map in our school colours.
This mural will be mounted on the eastern wall of the School Library (facing the hockey field) for the benefit of the whole school community. While this permanent installation reflects the importance of inclusion to our school community, the process of engaging all students in its production has been very important to the concept design.
The concept was developed by a team of VCAL students who participated in a series of workshops. Then, with assistance from the Moreland Youth Movement Project, the VCAL team commissioned local artist, Shakeel Tariq.
This partnership project between Moreland City Council, Brunswick Secondary College, Merri Health and Inner Northern Local Learning & Employment Network focuses on empowering young people to have a voice in their local community. The project has been a great success thanks to all involved.

VCAL & Pathways Coordinator
These projects have provided an exciting learning experience for our VCAL students. They have embraced the challenges of organising their community based projects with enthusiasm, dedication and passion. The strong partnerships that have been created by the students throughout this process (with Merri Health and Moreland City Council) will definitely continue to benefit BSC VCAL students into the future.
The VCAL cohort can be rightly proud of their effort. As they graduate from BSC, the mural they leave on the school site is a great legacy; it will remind all of the important message of inclusion and diversity that is so highly valued by our community.
education project
The second VCAL team are still working on their project - an education campaign for local primary schools.
With the help of Russ from Merri Health, Youthworx and the students from Belle Vue Park Primary School, our VCAL group are educating others on important topics including racism, inclusion and anti-bullying.

It has been really motivating to work as a part of a team to develop our education campaign. Attending Belle Vue Primary School was also an excellent opportunity to work with younger students.
