2018 Snow Trip

It was a bumper year for the Henry Kendall Snow Trip which saw increased numbers of budding and experienced skiers and snowboarders and great snow conditions. The first day was pretty wet, snowy, sleety and wild but students persevered and practiced their newfound skills like champs. The next day saw the sun emerge and an overnight freeze meant the students really needed to find their edges. Lessons progressed and students were riding all over the mountain with some groups going over the supertrail and riding t-bars. Friday was a brilliant day - sunny with nice snow conditions. By lunchtime the weary skiers and boarders were on the bus ready for the long journey home.

The students behaviour and attitude was excellent for the whole trip and their cooperation and organisational skills were appreciated by all of us. Many thanks to Miss Imer and Miss Sexty for their time, care and attention helping the students throughout the trip and in particular I would like to thank Mr Mellish who spent so much time organising the students, assisting them and making sure that they got the most out of their trip, particularly when we went a man down!

Year 11 First Aid Course

The Year 11 PDHPE class undertook their First Aid course as part of their First Aid option. Students learnt about the following:

  • What are the main priorities for assessment and management of first aid patients?
  • How should the major types of injuries and medical conditions be managed in first aid situations?
  • What does the individual need to consider in administering first aid?

At the end of the course students received their first aid certificate. Well done to all of the students in the Year 11 PDHPE course for their participation.

Sportsperson of the Week

A new initiative has been started by the PDHPE faculty this term “Sportsperson of the Week”. This award is distributed at the conclusion of Tuesday sport.  Nominations are received from the staff at Henry Kendall for students who have gone above and beyond and been positive role models at weekly sport. This award is not necessarily given to the student who is the most talented at sport, but given to the individual who assists other students, has a positive attitude and/or makes a positive contribution to the Henry Kendall sports program. The following students have received the award thus far:

  • Week 2 – Lara Hookway  (Lara stayed on the ice the entire time at ice skating last week and was a positive influence and support for other students who had not been to ice skating before)
  • Week 3 – Annabel Worrad (Annabel was an active participant in the girls team that attended the recent Oz Tag Gala Day at Adcock Park in which she demonstrated both outstanding teamwork and leadership skills. Annabel also represented Henry Kendall at the Sydney North Athletics Carnival participating in the Under 15's 4 x 100m relay team. Annabel consistently demonstrates a positive attitude when she represents Henry Kendall).
  • Week 4 – Oliver Worrad (Oliver was exceptional on the snow trip. Oliver supported his peers whilst they were learning to snowboard. This involved helping students setup their gear, taking groups of students down runs and giving them pointers on how to improve their skiing and boarding. His support to both staff and students was exceptional. Oliver even went out of his way to help other boarders who were having difficulty coming down the mountain).

PDHPE New Syllabus – Faculty Planning

During weeks 7, 8 and 9 the PDHPE Faculty will continue their planning days for the implementation of the new 7-10 PDHPE syllabus. Mr Wright and Miss Perkins recently attended a PDHPE Planning Day in which they were able to share ideas and gather resources from other PDHPE teachers in the Central Coast Network.
