House Athletics

The annual House Athletics Sports are to be held on Friday 6th March at Pedrina Park, commencing at 9.10am. There are lots of opportunities for all the students to participate on the day with a full program and track and field events running simultaneously – only the 1500m events are being held before the day at lunchtimes on the school oval. This has meant I will need as many parents and friends of the college to volunteer to assist during the day so please contact me if you are interested in helping for all or part of the day. House teams will be selected in House meetings during the next week and the programme of events will be in next week’s newsletter.

Swimming

A full report on the GD Swimming carnival being held today in Portland will appear in next week’s newsletter. The whole team attended a special lunchtime training session on Wednesday with our swimming coach Mr Ben Singh and good numbers have been attending after school sessions also so hopefully we can win the overall aggregate shield this year.

Football

There is a flyer with this newsletter with some information about football training for those boys interested in playing with the Hamilton Kangaroos in the newly formed Greater South West Junior Football League in either Under 14 or 16.5 divisions.

It has been great to see many College boys already training with the Hampden team coaches and hopefully more will choose this exciting opportunity.

For more information contact me or Jason Bourke at the school.

Hockey

Students interested in playing hockey for the College during Terms 2&3 have been asked to register this interest with Miss Kristen Waldron, Mr Stephen Nelson or me.  These indications of interest will enable us to enter the appropriate number of teams at the forthcoming Association meeting and, following that, we will seek formal confirmation and approval from parents for the involvement of their sons and daughters in teams.  Should your daughter or son not have contacted one of us to date, or if they are uncertain whether they have, please let one of us know in the next few days.

Rowing

On Friday the 15th, 8 seasoned boys and one esteemed cox, Milly Howells, travelled to Ballarat for the prestigious Head of Schoolboys’ Championships. The regatta was held on 2km course of Lake Wendouree, where the two boys’ quads would endure the tough conditions and competition.

The racing commenced on Saturday with the two crews making early starts to prepare for the upcoming races. The senior boys’, consisting of Ned Walker, Sam Crawford, Harry Mould, Milo Cooper and coxed by Milly Howells, saw great success in their 2km heat, despite challenging congestion on the start line, qualifying for the A final of Open Division 1 Men’s. The junior boys’ made up of Nick Northeast, Ed Williamson, Tom Stratmann, Byron McMahon, and again coxed by Milly Howells, also experienced some good racing, and managed to qualify for the C final of the Year 9 Division 3.

Later in the day, refuelled and excited for the race to come, the senior boys’ readied for the challenging A final. They faced a challenging race, with tough competition and difficult weather. The boys competed well, placing a respectable 5th in the final despite some rudder issues. Shortly after, the junior boys’ headed for the start line ready for their final. They rowed strongly but were unfortunately pipped by some strong competition, placing 4th, however all boys and coach Josh Frichot were pleased with the result.

A huge thanks goes to Paul Mould, Nick Palmer and Josh Frichot for their efforts during and leading up to the weekend. Rowers were also very appreciative of the healthy and delicious food provided by Bianca Scaife and Julia Howells.

Rowers are now preparing for the State Championships, with senior crews increasing their training regime to five times a week, as they apprehensively await the competition in two weekends’ time.
