10s & 11s Art Show

The 10s & 11s had a wonderful Art Show last week.  In true Preshil style, the children ran the show.  They wrote and presented an acknowledgement of country and speeches and officially opened the exhibition with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The wide range of themes and mediums on show was a reflection of the diverse and wonderfully expressive individuals that make up the 2018 10s & 11s cohort.  Each student had their own unique take on the idea that ‘All Art is Autobiographical.’  Some students practiced and refined a skill or individual style, some tried something completely new and some explored a concept or theme that was important to them and chose a medium that best expressed that idea.

It is one thing to create an artwork but another to present that artwork for an audience.  The 10s & 11s took great pride in their artworks and carefully considered how to display it.  They cleared the room, mounted their work onto card, arranged plinths, decorated with bunches of flowers, and of course set up a tea station for their visitors.

A big congratulations to all the artists!

Wishing everyone a happy holiday.  If you are stuck for something to do over the break, I encourage you to visit some of Melbourne’s Galleries.  Heide Museum of Modern Art is a great day out.  You can take your own lunch and picnic in the sculpture garden.  The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) has a great children's program and they will be running a free and exciting festival for kids from  5–13 January.   If you are going away on holidays, check out the local galleries in the area. Drawing journals are a great way to capture holiday experiences and observational drawing is always fun in a new environment.  If you want to get creative at home, you can make paint from materials foraged from your garden or pantry.  All you need is a mortar and pestle.  Turmeric powder, berries, beetroot, flowers and soil are a great place to start.  You can even make your own paint brushes using feathers or leaves bound to a stick with string.

Happy making!
