It has been an exciting week at Myrniong!  It was lovely to have so many mothers join us for breakfast on Monday - the Refectory and the Handbury Centre were hives of activity.  If you were unable to join us, we hope that you were suitably spoiled on Sunday.

The Year One children enjoyed their first foray into the Senior Hospitality Centre, where they worked alongside the Year 11s to produce bags full of baked goodies to take home.  This experience was a part of a Year One programme highlight – The Shared Table (an off shoot from the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden programme).  Thank you to Mrs Lisa Guegan-Brown for leading the cooking experience and Mrs Felicity Satchell who assisted the children.  The photos on our Facebook page capture the excitement and the fabulous dedication of the Year 11 mentors.

The students have put the final touches on their class Art Canvases which will be featured at our Art Auction on Saturday, 21st May.  This P&F initiative promises to be a fabulous evening of fun, so make sure you have your ticket!

The Year Three and Five children worked well as they completed their NAPLAN papers, some choosing to use the new whisper phones to read their work back to themselves when checking it.  The brilliance of the whisper phone is that no one else can hear, which maintains the silent environment and concentration of others.  I enjoyed listening to a group of Year 3 boys in the playground, following one of the papers, as they chatted about the strategies that they had used to complete a paper and sharing their learning.

One of the big highlights was the presentation of the Cross Country House Cup.  In the week preceding, the House Captains had each tightened their House Ribbons attached to the cup in the hope that their ribbons would be the remaining colour!  Congratulations to all of the children for their Cross Country efforts: 4th Young, 3rd Berry, 2nd Learmonth and 1st Laidlaw.  Well done to Laidlaw House Captains, Lachlan Rees and Charlotte Rowe, who made a gracious acceptance speech in Assembly and also helped our Laidlaw Prep, Freddie, understand his contribution towards winning the cup.

Our Community Liaison Officers, Tobe Adamson and Ella Churchill, have enjoyed their first foray into journalism. They have written an article about Leadership at Myrniong for Hamilton’s Spectator newspaper.  Their article is published in this week’s May 12th edition of the Spectator.

Young House Service Invitation

Next week, Young House will lead our Church Service at the Uniting Church (Tuesday, 17th May at 10:15am).  All family and friends are welcome to join us for this Service of worship around the theme of finding humour.

Australiasian Mathematics Problem-Solving Challenges Begin!

Next week our Year 5 Mathematics Olympiad team and the Year 4 Mathematics Games Challenge team will both face the first of 5 challenges for the year.  The challenges are presented in a variety of ways, worded, algorithm or pictorial, and require several steps for completion, along with some ‘efficient’ strategies for problem solving!  Competitors are challenged to look for a pattern, use logic and reasoning, create a table or draw from a bank of further strategies they have developed.  Both teams have particularly enjoyed attempting a series of riddles that can be found on the TED Education website.  If you enjoy a brain teaser, google:  TED-Ed riddles.

The Mathematics Olympiad programme and Mathematics Games Challenge provide enrichment and extension for children who demonstrate particular capability in this area of the curriculum.

Jump Rope for Heart - Friday 20th May

Each May the Junior Campus takes part in the Jump Rope for Heart House Challenge.  This activity and associated fundraiser (for those who choose to take part in the fund raising aspect of the event) promotes an active lifestyle for heart health and heart research.  An information brochure will come home this week.

The House Jump Rope for Heart ‘Jump Off’ will take place from 2.00pm to 3.00pm on the Myrniong Multipurpose Courts.  Parents are warmly invited to join us for skipping or just supporting the participants.  Students are to wear their PE uniform with House tops to school for the day.

School Photos

Your school photographs are now in production and you will receive them in approximately four weeks’ time.

Farewell Zach

Next Friday we will farewell our Gapper, Zachary Lancaster-Adlam.  Zach has been a wonderful support and help to staff and students in the Primary Classrooms, Physical Education and on excursions.  Zach is returning to England to commence a Primary Education Teaching course and leaves us with lots of valuable experience and our best wishes.

Myrniong Art

Something exciting is about to happen!  Sharing our work with our peers, our teachers and our families is always exciting.  We do this in a variety of ways on a day-to-day basis; displays around the school, the College blog, sending artwork home, exhibits in our school.  This time we are branching out and going GLOBAL.  We have entered the Year 4 and 5 Bushfire Gallery (which is on display in the Myrniong Hallway) into the UNESCO International Art Education Week exhibit occurring from the 21st to the 29th of May.  The brief for entries to the exhibit was as follows: Arts Education for Sustainable Development ‘recognises the ongoing importance of arts education in contributing to local and global awareness of cultural, economic, environmental and humanitarian concerns.’  The exhibit will be found online at http://www.inaea.org/

We are also busy gearing up for the Parents and Friends Art Auction.  This is a major fundraiser and this year the funds are being directed towards a new covered outdoor area for Myrniong, so please purchase your ticket and join us for this fun-filled night of bidding, music and entertainment.  Art work by students, staff, parents and friends will be up for auction and I know that there are some great pieces coming from the Junior Art Room very soon.  If you want a sneak peak you might want to head to www.juniorarthamiltoncollege.weebly.com
