Year Advisers Reports

Year 8

Year 8 have made an excellent start to 2020. Students are already building positive relationships with their peers and new teachers. They are adjusting well to new routines and new courses. Year 8 as a group appear to be enjoying the added responsibility that comes after leaving the security of the Middle School program.

I am frequently encouraging Year 8 to make the most of their schooling years and to get involved in as many activities as possible. It was very pleasing to see so many Year 8 students attending and competing in the swimming carnival. The students all had a great day and there were plenty of smiling faces. I thank Year 8 for their behaviour during the carnival. Congratulations to Sanika Nou for being the 14 Year Old Girls Age Champion. Congratulations and good luck to all students who have made Zone Swimming.

I would like to welcome the new students that have joined Year 8 in 2020 and I look forward to continuing to work with you over the next 5 years. I would also like to thank the Year 8 cohort for the way they have accepted their new friends.

Please remember to work hard and try your best. Be kind to each other and remember

“Self-belief is the

secret to success”.

Year 10

Welcome back to another year, Year 10!

It has been great to see so many Year 10 students start the year so positively. I welcome all of our new students and their families to Henry Kendall High School. We have 10 new students joining us this year and I commend how welcoming the rest of Year 10 has been, making sure our new students know where they are going and have somewhere to sit at break time. I would like to recognise all students who are taking on an active role in supporting each other and standing up for their peers, it had been great to see Year 10 student grow.

All Year 10 students are settling into their new electives and seem to be taking on the new challenges of being in Year 10. Year 10 have been given their assessment booklets, this provides them with an overview of all tasks that they have due. I encourage Year 10 to organise themselves to ensure they submit all tasks when they are due. It is important for Year 10 students to be aware when assessments are due and if they are away for any reason, on a due date, that they fill out an appeal form and follow process.

Year 10 students showed amazing school spirit at the swimming carnival, not only did they participate in many events, but they encouraged and cheered each other on to success. Congratulations to the age champions, Jade Sweeney and Casey Stone!

I look forward to another amazing year with Year 10!

Year 12

Welcome back, Year 12, to your final few terms of secondary school! It may feel like a long thirteen years to get to this point, but this last chapter will go by very quickly. I hope all students had time to reflect and plan over the holidays to ensure they can avoid the perils of procrastination, while also allowing for important down time to recharge and refocus. These ideas were emphasised to Year 12 right from the start of the term, with all students taking part in workshops with Elevate to learn about important study skills and habits – please take the time to consider how you will apply these tips throughout the year.

Well done to all students who have added to their busy loads with extra events over the last five weeks. This includes the leadership group organising a successful combined disco with HKHS and Gosford, participating in Year 12’s last school swimming carnival (although they unfortunately lost the staff vs student relay race due to disqualification), trekking Mount Kosciuszko on the Geography excursion, and having their final student photos taken.

Special mention must go to Priyansh Gupta, who despite being involved in all of the other activities, has also spent the last few weeks involved in the Lions Youth of the Year program. He made it through to the second round and made Mr Ardley and myself incredibly proud during his presentation of his impromptu and prepared speeches last week. Unfortunately, he did not make it through to the next round, but he was highly commended by all present. Great work, Priyansh!

I’m excited to announce that the formal has been booked for the 17 November at Crowne Plaza, Terrigal. We have lots of fundraising to do in preparation for the event, which was successfully kick started by Year 12’s organisation of HK’s favourite Valentine’s Day traditions.

Thank you to all students who helped sell serenades, lollipops and chocolates during their break times and a massive thank you to the music class for enthusiastically performing 60 songs on the day.

We also have a Bunnings BBQ booked in for Sunday 2 August, so there will plenty of opportunity then for lots more students to help out and demonstrate to the wider community how great they all are.
