Environment Group

with Mr Hekkema

The environmental group at Woodman’s Hill Ballarat Secondary college

Planting the plants was hard work but very rewarding, we went on the oval with Mr. Hekkema and we dug holes to fit the plants that Mr. Hekkema had since a seedling. It was very rewarding watching all our hard work grow and knowing they will be there when I graduate. Planting the plants was the easiest part in the whole journey! We had a lot of work cut out for us. We had to put white protectors on the plants because wild rabbits would come and try and eat the baby plants. Photosynthesis is rewarding to see as we needed to be careful in the measurement where we put the plants because the sun still needed to reach them to grow. The experience was very good and it was really fun I was very happy knowing I’m contributing to the environment to improve our air quality since they are trees.

Making the gravel path was the hardest part as we had to dig the gravel and put it in a wheel barrow. Digging up the gravel was hard as it was very time consuming but knowing we can walk around the path soon is very rewarding. Making the actual path was also very time consuming but also really fun, we had to spread the gravel. We made the gravel path in a big circle so we aren’t walking on dirt.

Watering the plants were very easy as we filled up a big wheel barrow full of water and took it up during our lunch times. It was also sad because sometimes we would see that the plants didn’t make it or they got eaten. It was also really good because majority of them actually grew and it means we were successful. Watering the plants were easy as we knew we were helping with the photosynthesis as for a plant to grow we needed water and sun. We have Mr. Hekkema and Mr. McLeod to thank for taking us and letting us contribute to the school.
