🧒 Future You Student competition

How would you change the world with Science, Technology, Engineering, or Maths?

Women in STEM Ambassador, in an Australian Government Initiative, to encourage women and young people into STEM careers. Competition is open to Australian residents aged 8-12 years. All Year 3 to 6 students were introduced to the competition during Science class time. All St Raphael's students 8 years old and above are encouraged to enter. I will support all students if they require any assistance.

Full Terms and Conditions are available here. The competition commences Monday 15th Mar 2021, 10:00 AM: AEDT and finishes at 11:59 PM AEST 11th Apr 2021 (‘Term’).

Please note: the competition is free to enter.

Competition information:

Upload your drawing and write 50 words or less about the STEM job you would have and how you would change the world!

The two most inventive and exciting entries will win a STEM prize pack and have their character featured on the Future You website.

After uploading, Future You will generate a link that will need to be shared with a parent or guardian. They will need to go to the link to complete your competition entry.

Physical Sciences Unit: On the move!

Learning Intention:

Students will be able to predict the outcome of a reaction between vinegar and bi-carb soda.

Success Criteria:

Students can observe the results of the chemical reaction of vinegar and bi-carb soda producing a build-up of carbon dioxide gas and propelling the fizz rocket forward.

Learning Intention:

Students will be able to look for things inside the classroom that move, on the school grounds and outside the school grounds.

Success Criteria:

Students can describe their observations of how things move.

🙉 Year 1/2:

Physical Sciences Unit: Look! Listen!

Learning Intention:

Students will be able to understand that some sounds are soft and some are loud and that we can change the volume of a sound.

Success Criteria:

Students can organise plastic bottles according to the loudness of the sound they make. They can also work in groups to make the sounds softer and louder.

Learning Intention:

Students will be able to identify heat as a form of energy and understand that we can sense it using our senses.

Success Criteria:

Students can investigate how we can make things warmer by placing a chocolate frog in the hot sun. The students work scientifically by predicting, observing, and recording their investigation.

🍫 Years 3-4:

Chemical Sciences Unit: Melting Moments

Learning Intention:

Students will be able to work in teams to observe what happens when different materials are placed in the freezer.

Success Criteria:

Students can discuss the terms freeze and melt and complete their storyboards.

Learning Intention:

Students will be able to present their ‘Run, Run, Runny’ homework activity.

Success Criteria:

Students can listen to others and use their oral language skills to communicate their ideas about melting.

💡 Years 5-6:

Physical Sciences Unit: Seeing the light

Learning Intention:

Students will be able to explore STEM skills and careers and discover the 'Future You' with STEM.

Success Criteria:

Students can enter the 'Future You' competition and begin to create an image of themselves as STEM professionals and identify the STEM job they would have and how they would change the world!

Learning Intention:

Students will be able to participate in an online incursion with Melbourne Water to explore World Water Day (March 22).

Success Criteria:

Students can create an information piece, highlighting important facts about water and wetlands.

🍞👩‍🦽TAKING ACTION!

This year we will continue to collect bread tags for 'Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs' and we will also begin collecting plastic bottle tops. Last year, the students were moved to action when they discovered that many young shearwater birds hatching on Lord Howe Island were dying because of the plastic they were consuming which includes plastic bottle tops. There are collection tubs in the Science Room, so please encourage and support your children to collect bread tags and plastic bottle tops to care for Our Common Home.
