Materials Technology

Year 6 Balloon Cars

Students where challenged to solve a number of design challenges to produce an air powered vehicle that could travel in a straight line over the greatest distance.

The year 6 students worked with different construction methods to reduce friction, direct energy and manufacture to a high standard.

Year 8 Twisty Wind Ornaments

In Term 1, the Year 8 Materials Technology students have developed a range of new skills to document and produce high quality products from acrylic plastic. The students applied these skills to produce a “Twisty” wind ornament and an Acrylic Photo Frame. The processes that students utilised included the 3 step polishing method using hand tools, abrasives and the buffing machine to polish acrylic, various heating techniques to shape their products and the Epilog Laser to engrave their Twisty and Photo frame. Next students will learn how to join timber using rebate joins to produce products from timber and acrylic.

Year 10 Design Solution

The Year 10 Materials Technology students have been designing solutions for an end user group here at the The Lakes. The Science and Stem faculty required a set of garden beds to help students learn about plant biology. The Year 10 Materials students interviewed Marcus Finlay and identified the design problem and developed a design brief complete with constraints and considerations.

The students then applied mathematics and geometry to lay out the position of the garden beds.

They are now levelling the site in preparation for the garden structure to be installed.
