Surfside's Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program

Cooking up a storm

Check out the recipes below to see what we are cooking this fortnight, and try them yourself at home!

We added a bit of spice to the mix this fortnight, with our fresh green chillies ready for harvest from the garden. Some young palates were delighted, and some were a little challenged!

More Kitchen Garden helpers are still required!

We are delighted to be able to welcome adult volunteers back into the Kitchen and Garden program! Parents, grandparents, community members etc, all welcome.

We do need your help, please get in touch ASAP if you can spare any time. Some classes are still very low on volunteers, especially in the garden.

Volunteers require a current Working with children card (free to apply), and will need to do a brief induction at the front office.

It is great fun and you will get to taste some amazing dishes made from our fresh produce (kitchen classes), and/or enjoy some fresh air and sunshine while helping to grow our veggies.

Help is required for all or any of the following:

  • Garden classes - held each Monday
  • Kitchen classes - Tuesday and Wednesday mornings
  • Garden maintenance outside of class time

Please email camille.mewett@education.vic.gov.au or contact the office for further information.

In the garden

We sure are busy getting all our cool season crops in at the moment. Year 4 and 6 have recently planted an array of different veggies - garlic, lettuce, rainbow chard, cauliflower, broccoli, spring onions, radish, carrots, peas and snowpeas!

Year 6 harvested several kilos of jerusalem artichokes this week. These are a tuber that look a lot like ginger, but taste nutty and savoury and can be eaten raw or cooked.

We are also busy keeping our composting systems healthy, with the recent addition of more food scraps since the composting program has started up both in classrooms, and with Food Scrap Fridays. So this means lots of turning the compost, adding dead leaves and other carbon materials (e.g. shredded paper and cardboard), and watering it well.

Food Scrap Fridays

Remember to bring your buckets of scraps each Friday morning! Food Scrap Fridays are continuing this term. To date we have saved 60kg from going to landfill!
