Out and about with Mr Walsh

Principal Report

Welcome Back to Term 2

On behalf of everyone at Surfside Primary School we hope that you all had a restful term break and managed to have some quality family time together. We want to welcome back all of our families and a special welcome to the Johnson family who started with us this term. It has been great to see our students and staff settle back into the term with confidence and a keen focus on their learning. It has been a busy first week and we have had a number of accomplishments take place and we anticipate another busy term ahead with many highlights.

Our students have been grateful for the extension of our bike shed and this has saved some congestion at the end of the day. Thank you to Damien and his group for completing this for our students. The 5/6 students were lucky to engage with Constable Robbie Noggler who presented on the importance of becoming a safe digital citizen.

Please continue to stay up to date with all of our news, dates and happenings at Surfside through our newsletter and Compass and we wish all of our students, staff and families all the best for a positive and engaging term 2.

Mr Peter Walsh

Principal

Sensory Playground - Open for Business

Our sensory playground officially opened this week and we have had all of our students experience this great natural play space. We want to thank Gill Hodgson and her team for putting together the submission of the Inclusive Schools Grant and also thank The State Government of Victoria and the Victorian School Building Authority for supporting this great initiative. Please check out our short video below and thanks to Mr Chapman for his great video work and editing skills.

Well Done Cross Country Team - Thanks COLES!!

Our Cross Country team participated in the District Championships at Eastern Gardens on Wednesday. Our qualified students have started the term preparing for the event with some early morning training sessions and performed brilliantly on event day with many personal bests. We were thrilled last Friday to be greeted with water bottles and fresh fruit to fuel our students following their hard work at training. We thank Coles Ocean Grove for their support and giving our kids a fresh start to the day. A big thank you to Mr Cunningham, Mr Wilkie and all of our parents for supporting our students and we have had a number of students who have now qualified for the next round of Cross Country - GO TEAM SURFSIDE!!!! Below are some photos from the day (Thanks Eamon for your snaps) and a snapshot of results.

ANZAC Day Service and Assembly

Our students, staff and families had the opportunity to celebrate and remember our armed services with a special ANZAC Day assembly and service. Our students showed great respect and consideration during the service and a big thank you to our school captains for their coordination of the service. Our students participated in some classroom activities throughout the week and also prepared and presented some Gratitude Wreaths on behalf of their classes. We also want to thank Maggie for being our school representative at the Ocean Grove ANZAC Day service and laying a wreath on behalf of Surfside Primary School. Lest We Forget

School Council Meeting - April Meeting

Our April School Council meeting took place on Tuesday evening and we welcomed for the first time a student representative to present on behalf of our students. Our school captains will attend our school council meetings on a rotational basis on behalf of our student cohort and Heidi was able to present a snapshot of student leadership that is occuring within the school and their goals for term 2. Some highlights of our school council meeting included the following:

  • Presentation of our Annual Report to the school community
  • Confirmed budget for 2021
  • Community support from Coles Ocean Grove
  • Announcement and proposal of our upcoming Art Fair
  • 2022 enrolment and staffing updates

Our next meeting will take place on Tuesday 18th May and thank you to all involved.

Keeping our community COVIDSafe

It is still as important as ever to continue to be vigilant and ensure adequate health and safety precautions in our community to keep our community COVIDSafe.  The Victorian Government, Department of Health and Human Services and The Department of Education continue to have stay safe measures in place to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our local community. We can all do our part in the following ways:

  • Continue good health and hygiene practice by washing hands regularly, coughing or sneezing into our elbow and using hand sanitiser regularly.
  • When unwell it essential that you remain home, seek medical advice and be tested if required.
  • Ensure 1.5m physical distancing when required.

Continue to stay safe and healthy throughout 2021.
