IDAHOBIT stands for International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia.
The date marks when, in 1990 the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems.
In 2004 the date was first recognised but since then has grown to recognise Bisexual, intersex, and the trans- community.
It is an important date celebrated and acknowledge now worldwide; honouring the great triumphs as well as acknowledging the prejudices still felt by those in the full and diverse LGBTQIA+ community.
Bairnsdale Secondary College is registered as a Safe School and the College is committed to providing support, resources and education for all our students, and particularly in regard to communities that have been historically marginalised and stigmatised, we must ensure that all people’s rights are honoured.
This year a group of our students known as The Rainbow Connection Group are leading us with the days celebrations as our students always have. We are currently organising the event on Monday 17th May to be an out of uniform day with activities at lunch time. There will also be a small assembly for students in the Rainbow Connection Group. The students have been working extremely hard on the event and we are keen to see their works come to fruition
Important Information to know:
Monday 17th May will be an out of uniform date, we ask if students could come in Pride colours or that of any of any flag in the LGBTQIA+ community.
Students will have activities and games at lunchtime as well as tables of information and support.
We look forward to sharing some colourful photos of the College celebrating IDAHOBIT day in our next newsletter.
