Grade D Debaters Dazzle

March 18 marked the first debating competition of the year for East Doncaster Secondary College. Nerves and excitement were in the air as the team gathered at Ivanhoe Girls Grammar preparing for the speeches. We had our Grade D team attend for the first installment of the year. We decided to have a quick practice while our adjudicator Joel, a self proclaimed “mean and scary man down at the back” got situated.

Our three stars were Vibhaan, Muqtadir and Nanaki ready to face Preston High School, arguing for the subsidies of tourism for regional Victoria. Our team hammered home the hard hitting facts. Vibhaan appealed to common sense, stating “more tourists equals more hotel booking, more restaurant money and more resort money” with a barrage of statistics to back himself up. Muqtadir focused on the Australian love for exploring and argued that as a nation of “travel freaks” it would be great for us to explore our own countryside. Our arguments were beautifully finished off with Nanaki’s rebuttal. Thinking on her feet and speaking beautifully, she proclaimed that the subsidies would protect the employment of those in tourism industries so people could continue “doing what they love.”

After what felt like ages of deliberation the adjudicator returned. We won! Muqtadir was named best speaker and we were victorious in our first debate of the year as a College, and first debate EVER for our team members! It was a thrilling night and we are looking forward to our next competition on the 22 April.
