Maths at home

Over the next few weeks we will cover what students should do to assist their Mathematical learning at home and in class.

What to do when a student cannot answer a question at home?

If students struggle to answer a question correctly or at all, there are many ways for students to assist themselves.

  1. Draw a diagram of the questions if applicable
  2. Identify what you are trying to answer
  3. Underline key words and label any diagrams
  4. Look at the answer and work backwards
  5. Look at the video or printed worked examples from the text or in students note book to assist in answering the question
  6. If you have access, look at the worked step by step solutions
  7. Ask the teacher next lesson for assistance

It is important for students to keep a record of questions that they struggled to answer. Students should record this in the back of their workbook. Title the last page in their workbook as “Questions I struggled with’ and then list the exercise/location of the question and number of the question.

e.g

“Questions I struggled with’

Cambridge Ex 3b Q4c, 5, 12

Mathspace – Linear revision tasks Q 6, 11c, 15

When they return to class they can easily locate which question they would like further assistance with.

This is also a good list to refer to prior to revision as students can review questions and concepts they struggled with and recall their learning and understandings.
