NAPLAN

Next week our Year 3 and Year 5 students will sit their NAPLAN Tests.  (The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy).  These assessments will take place on Tuesday (Language Conventions and Writing), Wednesday (Reading) and Thursday (Numeracy).

Whilst there are mixed reviews about NAPLAN, our school sees it as a beneficial tool to obtain school data. This year in particular, after a COVID interrupted year last year, we are interested to know how we are going.

NAPLAN is a single test at a point in time.  It does not create a full picture about the child, their strengths and differences.  It does, however provide us with valuable feedback and data on student performance in literacy and numeracy, which allows us to modify our teaching to better assist student learning.

This week teachers have explored and taught and practice tests, taking strategies, including:

• Reminding students to read and listen to all instructions carefully so they understand what is expected of them

• Supporting students to understand and work within time constraints

• Teaching students how to tackle various question types, including multiple choice questions

• Showing students how to go back and check their answers, and make sure they haven’t missed pages

• Highlighting and underlining key words

• Using a process of elimination

We wish all our students in Year 3 and Year 5 the very best for the NAPLAN testing period.  And we thank each teacher for their hard work, guidance and support over the last few months.  We encourage all parents to ensure that the children have a restful weekend prior.  Reassure your child if they are worried, and encourage them to take their time and simply to do their best.

Mother’s Day Stall

A big thank you to CHAPS and in particular Nikky Edwards for the organisation of the Mother’s Day stall today. The students were very excited to be able to choose a gift for their mother or the mother figures in their lives.

These events are not able to take place without the support of our wonderful families – thank you to all the parents who volunteered their time this morning to run the stall.
