Pathways & Careers

For Year 9 Students & Parents
Thinking about the world of work – and Work Experience in 2016
Year 9 students will spend some of this term exploring the skills and experiences they have already gathered that make them valuable to a potential employer. Work, either paid or voluntary, will take on increasing importance over the next few years, and research also shows that experience of the work force is one of the most useful tools for young people as they work out what their options for the future will be, and how they can achieve their study and career goals.
As part of this ongoing process, all students will be required to complete one week of work experience next year, at a workplace of their choosing. Students are responsible for sourcing and organising their own placement, although we do offer assistance with this during tutorial classes.
Students who get organised early will be able to secure better and more meaningful placements. Many of the more popular venues, such as Victoria Police, Melbourne Zoos or Melbourne Aquarium are either already closed or closing soon. Hospital placements also fill up very fast. Please encourage your son and daughter to think about places they would like to experience, and to start networking with friends, relatives and local community businesses in order to secure an interesting and meaningful placement. At this point, the preferred week for work experience will be November 21-25, 2016, but we are able to accommodate variations on that date for worthwhile placement opportunities. Talk to Ms Witt if you have any queries regarding work experience.
For Year 10 Students & Parents
sWork Experience Week is four weeks away. If your child is not organised yet, please encourage them to increase their efforts, as these placements are very valuable experiences. In a world where youth unemployment is as high as 25% in some parts of northern Melbourne, having experience in a work place can make a huge difference to a young person’s life.
For Year 12 Students & Parents
In their last tutorial period for the year, all Year 12 students were given a booklet that outlines the next phases of the VTAC process – namely the Change of Preference period and the Offer Rounds. You can download additional copies of this document via the link below. As a quick reminder, the most important dates are as follows:
- ATAR results available December 14.
- Change of preference closes December 21 (12.00 noon)
- Payment must also be made before then, or you cannot be made an offer.
- International students need to have their preferences finalised by December 16.
Students can visit Ms Kylie Witt at school any time until December 18, and can also seek advice via email. Please make appointments where possible to ensure availability when you want it.
