Secondary

Dear Families

It has been wonderful to have families back on campus for Parent-Student-Teacher interviews throughout the week. These are valuable opportunities to meet teachers and engage in constructive discussions regarding student progress. Using these conversations and their interim reports, we hope that students celebrate their strengths and areas of progress this term as well as set realistic goals for themselves in areas of opportunities for Term 2. A sense of accomplishment is an important element in students developing positive wellbeing over time, and this will often vary from individual to individual. Conversations to help students reflect on their effort and accomplishments over the term could include questions like:

  • What are you most proud of this term?
  • In which subjects have you applied yourself well?
  • When / where have you used your strengths in your learning?

Setting realistic and achievable goals for the term ahead will help encourage a sense of purpose and refocus following the holidays. Conversations to help students to identify the key goals they want to achieve for the term ahead might include:

  • What are one or two things you want to do differently next term?
  • What can you do more of / less of to help you with your learning?
  • How can I support you to stay focused and motivated this term?

Thank you to families for engaging with this round of Parent-Student-Teacher interviews. Staff appreciated the opportunity to connect face-to-face and we hope that you found them informative and meaningful.

Wishing our Year 12 students and staff the very best for Manresa next week.

Mercy Village music soiree

On Monday the Year 11 and 12 ATAR Music students, Barbershop, and Senior Voices held an afternoon concert for some of the residents at the Mercy Village Retirement Centre in Wembley.

The concerts have been happening each year since the beginning of the pandemic and according to some of the residents are a highlight of their village social calendar.

The students were warmly welcomed and were given a very positive reception. The quality of their performances was noted by many. The Music Department was enthusiastically reminded  at the end of the concert to come back again.

It's wonderful to see that our staff and students can share their gifts and talents with the wider community.

Slavery Free Chocolate Campaign

Pope Francis said, “every person ought to have the awareness that purchasing is always a moral – and not simply an economic – act.”

Not all chocolate is sweet. Not if a child has been forced to pick the cocoa beans - a key

ingredient of chocolate. About 80% of cocoa comes from West Africa and it is estimated that almost 2 million children are in child labour in these areas.

They may never go to school or taste the chocolate they help produce.

Companies sourcing cocoa certified by Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance are working

towards the elimination of slavery in the cocoa industry.

The Chocolate Scorecard

(https://www.chocolatescorecard.com/) is also a useful resource in this regard.

Make a change this Easter and only buy chocolate displaying the Fairtrade or Rainforest

Alliance logo.

Year 10 River Cruise

Last Thursday was an exciting night for the Year 10 students with our River Cruise - a date we had all been looking forward to. After getting dressed-up and arriving at Barrack Street Jetty by sunset, we checked in with our Homeroom Teachers before commencing the fun. The DJ pumped out requests on the dance floor and upstairs, the photobooth got a solid workout. We dined on pizza, drinks and Krispy Kreme doughnuts, while catching a much-needed breath of fresh air after showing off our best dance moves. We had the best time with all our friends and even loved seeing some of our teachers hit the dance floor. By the end of the night, we’d danced and sung so much, that we fogged up all the windows and left the boat looking like we had fallen overboard! Thanks to everyone involved for creating this awesome event for us and also to the Year 12 SRC students who came along to assist; we all wished the night would never end!

Save the date: Politics Q&A

Throughout the year, we will be holding a series of Politics Q&A seminars specifically designed for Years 11 and 12 Politics and Law ATAR students. With this said, if there are politically engaged students who do not do PAL but would like to attend, they are to RSVP to the Magis Coordinator at their earliest convenience. PAL students are to RSVP to their respective classroom teachers. We are delighted to announce that Ms Kate Chaney MHR, Dr David Honey MLA, and Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash, are scheduled to attend the College in Term 2. As per the College calendar, these Q&A seminars will be held afterschool in the Gonzaga Barry Lecture Theatre. This is a wonderful opportunity for our PAL students to broaden their understanding of key syllabus areas as well as engage in conversation with state and federal representatives.

Campion Day

On Thursday 30 March, Campion House celebrated and remembered Edmund Campion, a man of great faith and courage who found forgiveness by loving everyone around him. As an English martyr, Campion was killed because of his religious beliefs. He gave up a promising career and an invitation to enter Queen Elizabeth’s service to become a Catholic priest and minister to the abandoned Catholics. We look to Edmund Campion for inspiration, ultimately working towards fulfilling our House motto ‘faith and courage’.

We also celebrated who we are as a House; a passionate, lively, talented, caring and generous group of people. An important part of the day was the sharing of lunch together- sharing a meal contributes to stronger relationships and strengthens the bond of a Homeroom and of a House. All the students in Campion House gathered together for a liturgy and lunch.

Campion Cooking for Shopfront

Campion day finished on a high with Campion students coming together to cook meals for Shopfront. This was an opportunity for them to think about those who are less fortunate then they are, helping to reinforce that Campion students are ‘people for others’.

The role and function of Shopfront is to relieve poverty and suffering in an environment that offers practical assistance, fellowship and hospitality. The Shopfront is a service run predominately by a team of volunteers who offer assistance in a friendly, non-bureaucratic manner.

The Campion students had a busy afternoon in the domestic kitchen, from chopping and frying to sauce making. The result was delicious servings of spaghetti bolognaise. A huge thank you to Ms Brennan-Poland for her support with cooking the meals for this fantastic initiative.

GRIP Secondary Schools Leadership Conference

It was wonderful to experience the Secondary Schools GRIP Leadership Conference at the Perth Convention Centre on Tuesday 21 March once again post lockdowns. The Years 7-10 Homeroom Leaders were invited to partake in the conference which included themes such as conducting and organising events, engaging others, and incorporating the core values of Generosity, Responsibility, Integrity, and People to students’ personal lives and aligning them to their own school values and leadership teams.

The Years 7-10 leaders represented the College with distinction and will be involved is a student leadership develop program next term.

Thank you to Mr James McLaughlin, Mr Luke Bostelman, Ms Carla Tripi and Mr Cameron Haines who supported the students on the day.

Foods Year 10 Food Truck Trials

Year 10 students have been researching foods from around the world and trialing recipes to cook in teams of four in their 'virtual' food trucks. They have successfully cooked katsu sushi rolls, beef nachos, chicken shawarma wraps, fried chicken n’ chips, all finished off with berry and tropical acai bowls. Come enjoy the food truck delights early next term when they serve up meals for secondary staff and students.
