Champions Are Made, Not Born: KWS Mariners are Making the Big Stage

“Champions are made and not born. Champion’s feat are acquired and not inherited, earned and not transferred, attained and not deposited”
Ikechukwu Joseph

After a successful 2022 Winter Football campaign, it was only fitting to continue celebrations into the 2023 new year for the KWS Mariners. With the Mariner’s off-season well and truly underway, a special delivery arrived at Kinross Wolaroi School for player Ben Chambers (Year 7 2023). This esteemed parcel was a signed Mariners game ball from W-League Canberra United player Nickoletta Flannery (Number 19) and was awarded to Chambers for winning the Mariners ‘2022 Highest Point Scorer’.

Mr Jones (Head of PDHPE in the Junior School) presented the signed Flannery game ball to Chambers last month. We congratulate Chambers on his achievement and wish him all the best as he continues to develop as a quality champion both on and off the football pitch.

Cricket

U11 Cricket

Our U11 teams finished the season strongly, our U11 Blues registering a convincing win over CYMS to round out the season. Highlights included Stuey Bell’s 6/1 v Cavaliers, coming inches away from a hattrick.

U11 White finished the top of the two Kinross teams. However, when both sides came up against each other in 2 fixtures, the chocolates were shared, both registering 1 win each in close encounters.

U12/13 Cricket

The U12 teams have enjoyed a recent run of excellent form, qualifying for the finals off the back of some strong performances with both bat and ball. Ben Chambers and Tom Hughes both registering half centuries.

The semi final saw KWS come up against strong opposition, eventually going down to CYMS in an even contest. Tom Hughes and Billy Baldwinson top scoring with the bat while Sam Commins and Daniel Rourke took wickets.  Although disappointing for the boys, to make the semis 2 years in a row is a great achievement. Congratulations to all on a successful season. Thank you to the many parents who helped score, umpire & coach throughout the season. To Anthony Chambers, Trent Chapman, Ian Nash, and Patrick Rourke. Your time on the scorebook, coaching field, umpiring, organising equipment etc. is greatly appreciated.

Swimming

HICES Swimming Carnival held at SOPAC on 7 March 2023

After a very successful School swimming carnival, 29 Kinross Wolaroi students and families travelled to Homebush to compete in the HICES Swimming Carnival.

The night before the carnival, families and students held a team dinner. It was a great opportunity to foster team spirit and to strengthen friendships across the team.

The HICES carnival got off to a thrilling start with three of of our relay teams qualifying through to CIS.

Together the team put in excellent performances with many PBs set throughout the day and many first timers competing in the team being supported and cheered on by the broader team.

At the conclusion of the day Kinross placed 1st in the HICES Averages Shield for the highest point score based on number of students enrolled and 3rd place overall, behind Pittwater House School and Central Coast Grammar.

Overall, it was a fantastic day of competition, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. Our students should be proud of their efforts and achievement at the HICES Swimming carnival. A special thank you to Mr Jones, Mrs Fatai and Ms Morris-Beverstock who did a wonderful job managing the team. Congratulations to all the swimmers who participated!

16.03.2023 – Let’s Bring Home the Cup

“One man can be a crucial ingredient to a team, but one man cannot make a team” - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

A top of the table clash before the finals. A game of consolidation. A game of mixing ingredients. A game of great success for this great team.

The first quarter flew as fast as an eagle through the air. Some swift passes and gliding breakthroughs allowed the Lakers to optimise on opportunity and importantly, convert this opportunity into points.

With a full bench, there were plenty of fresh legs to substitute onto the court. This ensured accurate decision making for the Lakers, especially when it came to controlling the foul count. The Lakers held in defense well and shut down all shooting options of their opponents.

A few questionable calls shifted the game momentum ever so slightly, and our opposition attacked with prowess to close the gap.

When the buzzer called, 14 all was the number engraved onto the scoreboard.

Let’s continue to cook up a storm as we face our rivals in the finals commencing next Thursday.

Let’s start a new winning streak, yet this time retire with a * next to our name.

Weekly Points: *blind points board until the end of the season…

Which teammate will be the Lakers top weekly point scorer in 2023?
