Year Five/Six News

A catch up in 5/6

In the last couple of weeks the Year 5/6 students have been learning and consolidating a number of skills. It has been quite difficult with interruption caused from NAPLAN - but we manage!

In Reading, we have been learning to predict the text using our prior knowledge and understanding of the story so far. We have also been creating open-minded portraits based on the inferences we have made in the text. The main protagonist in our class novel is named Jamal. Through our reading and understanding of the text, we have inferred that he is kind, brave, determined and loyal based on the actions that he displays in the book. We can't wait to keep reading it!

In the Writer's Workshop, students have been continuing their writing. We have a large range of texts being written for a wide range of audience and purpose among our Year 5/6s. We had a particular focus on publishing texts this fortnight, looking at how we can be creative in the finished product to make the writing more appealing to read.

In Maths, we were understanding the relationship between addition and subtraction, and solving worded problems. We have now moved on to multiplication and division (everyone's favourite!). We look forward to learning the skills and strategies needed to solve various multiplication and division problems.

Science has been coming to an end in Term 1. We finished our unit on Earth and Space by creating a Keynote showcasing our knowledge on the 8 planets and the relationship shared between the Earth, Moon and Sun. Students will be sharing their presentations in the coming weeks.

Good luck to our Year 5's partaking in NAPLAN this week. We hope you display your knowledge of Reading, Writing, Spelling and Maths that you have been accumulating over the years.
