Year 7 Community Class

The Year 7 Community Option class have been thinking about recycling. Key words have been Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Repent, Repeat, Reuse, Repair, Repurpose and of course, Recycle! The class completed a giant crossword puzzle as a concluding exercise for this important learning experience.

Year 1 - Jam Making

On their first day of school, the Year 1s made apricot jam!

They were seen cutting, chopping, mixing, cooking and eating the yummy jam! They watched the process of the fruit and sugar mixture becoming liquid while it was hot and then looking again later to see that it had set when it had cooled down.

But the best of all was celebrating all the work that went into making the jam with a yummy lunch of jam on toast in our classroom.

Year 8 - Community Class

Is it fair? The Year 8 Community Option class have been asking this question with reference to the coffee industry. In the first world, coffee is simply a good thing! In the third world, it's much more complex. Many small scale farmers in the global south grow coffee but prices are low and life is hard. The Year 8 students found a way of expressing this ambiguous and challenging situation by creating a large scale "floor" mural. There is hope on the horizon thanks to the work of organisations like Fairtrade.

Year 1 - The Dark Room

The Year 1s have been reading Genesis 1 when God created the world. First there was only darkness until God created light. They saw what complete darkness would have been like and went into the "dark room" in the High school area. They discovered three ways to break the darkness with three sources of light: Sunlight, fire from a candle and light from a battery operated torch. What an exciting adventure they had!

Year 1 - Mr Pirate Visit

On Monday, the Year 1s had a strange visitor in their classroom. A pirate called Mr. Pirate (since he forgot his name) was looking for some clever people who could help him solve a challenge. He needed to work out how much money there was in his treasure chest, but he couldn't count. Good thing that the Year 1s are learning about Australian coins at the moment, so they were happy to offer their help.

On Tuesday, the pirate came back to find out if the children had worked it out and since they had counted the right way, they received some of his rewards. Some gold coins that they were allowed to keep (or eat) if they worked out how to share them equally.

Of course, they did.

Year 5 Lead in Worship

Monday morning is celebration time for the Primary School as they get together for Ignite! We have so many gifts and talents here at Cornerstone and it is great to see our students shine in the things they love to do both inside and outside the school. This week the Year 5 girls lead worship. Jacob Blakey was celebrated with the swimming medals (six) he won in Northam competitions. And our Year 3-6 ENGAGE students received certificates for their participation in lifesaving skills.
