Student Leadership

SRC

At Windang Public School the development of life long leadership skills is one of the learning opportunities offered to all students. Having effective student leaders supports the development of responsible behaviours, a positive school tone and encourages students to model the school values of SURF: Safe Always, United In Learning, Respectful and Cooperative, and Fair In Work and Play.

The development of student leadership skills involves opportunities which encourage students to:

• act in roles of responsibility with integrity and honesty

• foster a sense of vision and purpose

• work with others to determine and achieve collective goals

• take on responsibilities and use decision making skills in order to carry a project through to a successful conclusion

• be active, reflective listeners who respond effectively

• earn the respect of others through their actions.

How does our school enable student leadership?

· Value student voice

· School leadership structures promote inclusivity and encourage student participation

· Think beyond traditional leadership roles

· Foster leadership skills in the classrooms

· Choose pedagogy that builds skills for active citizenship

· Recognise and value students as active citizens now

Our Student Representative Council have begun discussing their goals for 2023. Over the next 3 terms, our SRC will host and participate in activities that work towards their chosen goal, supported by Miss Markham and Mrs Moulton.

GRIP Leadership Conference – University of Wollongong

Year 6 students, accompanied by Mrs Moulton, attended the annual GRIP student leadership conference at University of Wollongong on 10 March 2023.

Through music, dance and games, students were taken on a journey to learn that leadership is not about being the star at the top but an active community citizen who listens to others and serves those they lead. Our students embraced and demonstrated the GRIP values of Generosity, Responsibility, Integrity and People throughout the day and have returned to school excited to implement new ideas for their school community.

The University Hall was heaving with excited students from Campbelltown, the Illawarra and South Coast. We are proud to report that every time students were called on to volunteer for an activity, Windang Public School jumped up with confidence and excitement, showing no fear in front of an audience of at least 500 other students!

Schools were encouraged to share cool ideas and it is our plan to implement some of these fundraising activities and community bonding activities later in the year with our student leaders being the planners, organisers and facilitators.

We are confident that our world is in safe hands based on the care, compassion and empathy flowing from our school leaders.
