Year 5/6 Bulletin

Learning Intention: To order negative numbers, knowing that -10 is lower than -2.

Learning experience overview:

Red card, Black card

The purpose of this lesson is for students to use additive strategies when working with both positive and negative numbers. It also helps students understand the value of negative numbers and what happens when you cross 0.

How to play:

Shuffle and share a standard card pack between the two players.

Check that the students know how many cards there are in a standard pack and therefore how many each player has to start.

Rules:

The game starts at zero.

The game finishes at +15 for one player and -15 for the other.

Players take turns to add their card to the progressive total.

Red cards are negative so take away, and black cards are positive so add on.

Ace is worth 1. Court cards (J, Q, K) are worth 10.

Modifications:

  • Bounce backs (must land exactly on 15 or -15)
  • Playing to a larger number (25 or -25).
  • Use a number line as a tool to support counting on, especially when crossing from negative to positive numbers.
  • Record how many turns it took for a player to win. Is there a pattern or a certain amount of turns that is more likely to win a game (chance and probability).
