Principal's Report

Choose Kindness

We are all experiencing the effects of an ever changing and complex world. Every day we see how misinformation and mistrust erodes the foundation of systems and organisations that bind us together. Our human response to change can often lead to our fall back fear responses that breed negativity. This is where our values at Beaumaris Secondary College that come directly from our community are so important. Optimism pushes negativity away. It is our sense of optimism and hope for the future that keeps our educators focused on the learning and wellbeing of our children.

As partners with parents, we work together to help students realise the positive difference that they can make in the world. Another value which is key to kindness is respect. We start at the point of positive mutual regard that is founded on empathy and understanding for others. There has been of late, too much centred around self-interest and cynicism. Hugh Mackay in his book, “The Kindness Revolution”, wrote that “Cynicism is a form of despair, and despair is the antithesis of hope.” This has no place in education and certainly not at Beaumaris. We know that acts of kindness allow us to move beyond thinking about ourselves and giving to others. It is in this act of giving that we find meaning and purpose which is a strong protective factor for minimising feelings of anxiety.

It is important that we are able to show kindness when communicating with each other. If your belief is that we all want what is best for young people then this will be evident in how we communicate and share our concerns. There are so many aspects of our lives that we do not control but we do control how we react to the obstacles and frustrations that arise. So, for the benefit of our wellbeing, our children, our future, please choose kindness first.
