It's Time for a Family Huddle

Does your family have a set of guidelines you all agree upon and follow? If not, it’s time for a family huddle to establish your Family Digital Use Guidelines.

Tips for a successful family huddle:

  • Normalise technology conversations. If tech talk hasn’t been a thing in your home, then maybe don’t jump straight to guidelines. Start informal discussions over the next few weeks.
  • Lead with ‘Why’. Not all teens evaluate risks. Help them see why it’s not always safe online and the importance of a healthy balance for our wellbeing.
  • Keep it positive. Whether you like it or not, technology is here to stay. So, ensure your kids hear you talking positively with a balanced approach to gaming and social networking.
  • Ensure all voices are heard. Listen with empathy to your kids about why they use specific tech tools and understand their need to be connected digital citizens.
  • Co-construct your guidelines. Your kids will already have some great ideas for finding the balance and staying safe online. Empower your kids to contribute to good decision making and choices.
  • Rules are Rules. Monkey see, monkey do. These are family guidelines, not just for the kids. Are you being the role model your kids need when it comes to balanced technology use and following your family guidelines?
