Independence Centre

Curriculum

We had a wonderful week in the Independence Centre with lots of fun activities and events. 3/4W is excited to share what has been happening!

This week in Maths, students were learning to represent numbers in different ways including using MAB, money and place value. In one of our lessons, we were challenged to make the number 374 using exactly 32 MAB. To solve this challenge, we had to use our problem-solving skills and knowledge of place value. We also started using addition strategies including vertical addition, repeated addition and number lines. We even tried making equivalent number sentences. When we practiced our multiplication strategies, we realised it is very important for us to know our multiplication facts to help us solve problems faster.

This week in Reading, students were discovering keywords for their class novel, Wylah. We continued making a class dictionary for unknown words from Whurrong, a First Nations Language. Students also started reading groups and were getting assistance from teachers to understand Wylah's character development. We learned about summaries which involves sharing the main idea and events about texts we have watched, read or heard. It was fun and engaging!

In Writing this week, we have started our narrative texts. We made sure to spend time on our planning stage during our Big Write so that we had a good idea of the beginning, pebble, rock and boulder and conclusion. We had three prompts to inspire us and were able to gather ideas from our home talk. We also practiced breakdown buddies with partners and used constructive feedback to help us with editing and upleveling.

In Guided Inquiry, we continued our research from last week. We have been researching key dates for our timeline. Our timeline starts 65,000 thousand years ago and continues to the present time. One of our key dates are Uluṟu climb closure which happened in the year 2017.

In Wellbeing we completed a circle of control poster. The circle of control includes a circle of what we can control and what we can't. For example, I can’t control getting sick but I can control my words and what I watch - whether it's appropriate or not. We also practiced strategies to keep ourselves in the Green Zone when faced with different situations. This will be a great help when our Year 3 students begin NAPLAN next week!

This week, the Independence Centre was able to showcase our sports skills at Gala Day! We were able to practice our skills in Soccer, Rounders, Hotshots and Newcombe. Below are a few reflections on the day.

In Soccer, we had a spectacular day, goal after goal, we won and won! We ended up winning four games in a row. We received a big flag for winning. Now let’s see what other people like about soccer. "I like soccer because I had a great time vs other schools," "I like soccer because It’s fun kicking the ball," and "I like to exercise and play."

By Marko, Sean and Samreet

In Newcombe, we enjoyed playing against other schools. Newcombe is a game that is similar to Volleyball and we needed to show teamwork. We enjoyed winning games,  cheering the team on and being able to play different roles.

In Hot Shots, we had games that we played independently and with partners. We showed perseverance when playing alone and showed a lot of teamwork as we played with partners. It was nerve-wracking but it was fun playing against other schools.

In Rounders, we had an amazing time and we got a lot of home runs. We showed the school value of Respect while talking to the parent helpers, teachers and other schools. We showed a lot of teamwork and even when we didn’t win we still had lots of fun and improved our skills. One key moment was scoring our first home run.
