The Kids Corner section of this fortnight’s newsletter is written by Adhyan in Year 6, I trust you enjoy it just as much as I did!

Blessing In disguise (Narrative)

My maths homework was finally finished and I stretched out the cramp out of my hands. It was 4 in the afternoon and I had finished all my homework. I sat down on my swanky couch and started watching a documentary all about Ancient Civilisations as I was a History geek. It was extremely informative and I was engrossed in the show.

After approximately an hour, I heard a piercing sound saying “Jack, you have to clean the garden.” I switched off the TV and sprinted towards my mum. My mum told me that I had to clean all the leaves in the backyard and take out all the weeds too.

I hesitantly wore my slippers, grabbed the pair of rubber gloves and slammed the door behind me. I gradually picked all the leaves and placed them in the plastic bag. I was tired as hell but I had no choice.

The garden was filthy and leaves were all around me. I wanted to finish the whole documentary off but I had to do this household chore first.

The skylight was turning gloomy and dark, so I decided to increase my working speed. I started plucking the weeds out with my maximum energy and force.

I motivated myself to keep on going until there was only one weed left. It was a gigantic one. I grasped it with my sweaty and tired hands and pulled it as hard as I could. I fell back hitting my head against the grass. It was a minor injury and I was fine.

But something else was in my hand, rather than the weed. It was hard and I couldn’t figure out what it was. It was covered with an immense amount of soil and I tried to shove it off with my hands. It was not working, so I ran to the tap with a curious mindset as I wanted to know what was concealed behind the dirt.

I washed the grime off and to my surprise, it was a gold coin. It looked ancient but it was shining like a bright star. I was I immediately showed my mum and her initial reaction was “OMG!” and “how did you find that coin?” I explained to her what happened and she was astounded by this coincidence. There was a picture of a man wearing a laurel wreath on the coin and he looked familiar. I decided to research on the internet the exact type of coin until I found a similar image. I read the description of the artefact and it stated that the image was of a Greek God named Zeus. This was the best day of my life as I had collected a real-life ancient coin. I was astonished by what I had found and decided to place it in my precious collections which comprised of comic books, coins and currencies, trading cards, stamps and a tennis ball signed by Novak Djokovic.

The main takeaway today was “No Pain, No Gain.” Without me plucking the weeds out, I wouldn’t have found this extraordinary artefact which had been my best collectible item. I felt like a proud archaeologist as unearthing this ancient coin was the biggest achievement of my life so far.
