Chess Team Update

 by Archit 6A

On the 4th of November, GWPS Chess team played in the Chess Victoria Inter School State Grand Finals. We played against 3 top schools in a round robin format. Each team consisted of the top six players from their respective schools. Of these 4 schools, we emerged first, claiming the title of the Victoria Inter School State Chess Champions for the first time ever in GWPS history. The difference between the winner and the runner up was merely 4 points.

Over the years the six of us (Hemish, Tejas, Rahul, Sanuk, Nikhil and myself) have worked really hard and have persevered in the face of challenges, which has enabled us to achieve such wondrous accomplishments. Now we are heading off to represent Victoria at the Australian School Teams Championship. Due to COVID 19 restrictions, the tournament will be run as an online event on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th December. To ensure fair play, teams from each state will play their games online at a designated venue under the supervision of two arbiters and a state organiser. (In normal circumstances, we should have travelled to Canberra to play against other state champions).

Before I sign off I would like to thank Mr Catalano for providing us with such an opportunity, our parents and coaches for supporting us through all those days and nights and lastly our teachers for understanding, assisting and accommodating our needs around our extra-curricular activities. Stay tuned for more updates.
