JCU Webinar: Not all Superheroes Wear Stethoscopes

A recording of the latest webinar in the JCU seeking inspiration webinar series can be watched here. It is presented by Dr Hayley Letson and shares her career journey: After having her heart set on becoming a doctor, Hayley’s dreams were dashed when she was in a serious car crash in her late teens. With her rehabilitation experience making her even more determined to learn how the human body works, Hayley continued to chase her passion for medicine through studying science at JCU, majoring in physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry and molecular biology. But it was finding the right mentor that gave her the opportunity to work on breakthrough medical research in the area of emergency medicine, developing a new drug combination that is helping first-responders to save lives from trauma-related blood loss. Hear how Hayley overcame the many obstacles she faced on her ‘Plan B’ career journey, and how she is inspiring the next generation of doctors to engage with, and contribute to, the many research breakthroughs that are needed for medicine to progress into the future.

Creative Careers Webinar Run by the Wheeler Centre now available on demand

If you’re a creative teen thinking about future study options or a career in the arts, or wondering if your creative talents are still relevant, this talk from the Wheeler Education series is for you. Liminal magazine founder and PhD student Leah Jing McIntosh and journalist and documentary filmmaker Santilla Chingaipe survey the changing landscape of the arts in Australia, in conversation with Footscray High School student Felix Briggs. Panelists discuss the value and flexibility of creative skills and critical thinking and talk frankly about the risks and difficulties of careers in the arts, too. What do creative careers look like today? How do artists and arts workers juggle their creative pursuits with their need to make a living? Is it possible the economic and social upheavals in the post-Covid world will change the way we think about the creative industries? Watch this webinar for a practical talk about dreams, back-up plans and creative futures.
