Mentoring programme/ Program mentoringu

The mentoring programme has entered its 2nd year and has been successfully coping with everything that the coronavirus period has brought us. Year 1 students have met twice with their mentors already - once online and once in the playground - in face masks and from an appropriate distance. Despite the unfavourable situation, the mentoring programme continues. After all, times like this are when we appreciate friendship, help and support the most. I'm sure the friendships that will be formed thanks to mentoring this year will be precious. And many thanks to all our mentors for that!

Program mentoringu vstoupil do svého 2. ročníku a úspěšně se vypořádává se vším, co nám koronavirová doba přináší. Studenti prvního ročníku se již dvakrát sešli se svými mentory - jednou online a jednou na hřišti - v rouškách a v patřičné vzdálenosti. Navzdory nepříznivé situaci program mentoringu tedy pokračuje. Vždyť kdy jindy než v této době oceníme přátelství, pomoc a podporu? Jsem si jistá, že přátelství, která se díky mentoringu právě letos vytvoří, budou vzácná. A za to patří velký dík všem našim mentorům!

As a Year 6 student I decided to take part in the mentoring programme and I've been really enjoying it so far, despite the difficult circumstances. The Year 1s are really kind and friendly and it's my pleasure helping them with anything they need. I especially like that when we talk, the imaginary barrier between the two years disappears and the thing we have in common is essentially being members of the ECP community. It is great having someone to pass on the knowledge I gained since first entering the blue door and hopefully in 5 years time they will have this opportunity as well. I hope they are benefitting from the programme the way I think they are and that they will have the best time here at ECP.

Jako studentka 6. ročníku jsem se rozhodla zapojit se do mentorského programu a zatím si svoji účast velmi užívám, navzdory obtížným okolnostem. Studenti 1. ročníku jsou velmi laskaví a přátelští a je mi potěšením pomoci jim se vším, co potřebují. Obzvláště se mi líbí, že když spolu mluvíme, imaginární bariéra mezi dvěma různými ročníky zmizí a to, co máme společné, je v podstatě naše členství v komunitě ECP. Je skvělé, že mám komu předat znalosti, které jsem získala od svého prvního vstupu do modrých dveří ECP, a doufejme, že za 5 let budou mít studenti z 1. ročníku tu samou příležitost. Doufám, že z programu mentoringu těží tak, jak si myslím, a že se jim bude na Anglickém gymnáziu moc líbit.

The mentoring programme is a brilliant way of connecting the oldest with the youngest between ECP students and closing the circle of friendships. I see its main purpose as helping new Year 1 students integrate into the school community while giving Year 6 a chance to utilize their acquired knowledge. From my existing experience, the Year 1 students are really appreciating having a friend that they can contact anytime if they have any questions. I am also very happy to help, because I likewise was once a Year 1 student and can remember some of the worries and little confusions I had. Unfortunately the programme was established just last year, however I am certain that I would have really enjoyed it. 

Because a Y6 student has only one or, at most two mentees, they can become close and have enough time to help them individually. Of course the meetings are taking place on the school premises, meaning that it is convenient for both sides. Even though COVID has now restricted us meeting in person, I am happy that we at least got the chance to meet once in the school playground. The next meeting will take place via google meet, which is a bit less personal, however still better than not having it at all. 

I hope that this programme will continue in the future because I can already see the benefits and fun it creates.

Program mentoringu je skvělý způsob, jak propojit nejstarší a nejmladší studenty ECP a uzavřít kruh přátelství. Jako hlavní účel vidím to, že mohu novým studentům 1. ročníku pomoci integrovat se do školní komunity a zároveň dát maturitnímu ročníku šanci využít své nabyté znalosti. Z mých dosavadních zkušeností studenti 1. ročníku opravdu oceňují, že mají přítele, kterého mohou kdykoli kontaktovat, mají-li nějaké dotazy. Osobně také ráda pomůžu, protože jsem také jednou byla studentkou 1. ročníku a pamatuji si některé obavy, které jsem měla, a nějaké ty zmatky. Program mentoringu bohužel vznikl teprve minulý rok, jsem si však jistá, že bych za něj tenkrát byla moc ráda.

Vzhledem k tomu, že mentoři ze 6. ročníku se starají ​​pouze jednoho nebo maximálně dva studenty, mohou se více sblížit a mít dostatek času na individuální pomoc. Setkání se samozřejmě konají v prostorách školy, což je výhodné pro obě strany. Přestože nás COVID nyní omezil co se týče osobních setkání, jsem ráda, že jsme alespoň měli příležitost se jednou setkat na školním hřišti. Další schůzka proběhne virtuálně, což je o něco méně osobní, ale stále lepší, než nepotkávat se vůbec.

Doufám, že tento program bude pokračovat i v budoucnu, protože už nyní vidím jeho výhody a zábavu, která je s tím spojená.

The Volleyball Mixed Teams Interhouse Tournament in Year 4 took place on Monday 21st September. Under excellent weather conditions on a hot summer day a large number of players played six matches of relatively very good volleyball, well above the average level in the long history of the event. On top of that there is no doubt grass is the most luxurious of all volleyball playing surfaces, and a considerable number of players played barefooted, which is not only very convenient but also very healthy.

V pondělí 21. září se konal turnaj smíšených týmů 4. ročníku ve volejbalu mezi jednotlivými kolejemi. Za vynikajících povětrnostních podmínek v horkém letním dni odehrál velký počet hráčů šest zápasů velmi dobrého volejbalu, výrazně nad průměrnou úrovní v dlouhé historii této akce. Není pochyb o tom, že tráva je ze všech volejbalových hřišť nejluxusnější druh povrchu a značný počet hráčů hraje bos, což je nejen velmi výhodné, ale také velmi zdravé.

We were blessed with miraculously good weather for the Year 6 volleyball interhouse event. The atmosphere was most satisfying for the PE staff - just what we try to promote - sportsmanship, friendship, healthy competitiveness, good humour, generally - very good fun. The best good-bye to the outdoor volleyball season. 

Na turnaj ve volejbale pro 6. ročník nám vyšlo zázračně dobré počasí. Atmosféra byla pro učitele tělesné výchovy velmi uspokojivá - přesně taková, jakou se snažíme propagovat - sportovní chování, přátelství, zdravá konkurence, dobrá nálada, obecně řečeno velmi dobrá zábava. Bylo to to nejlepší rozloučení s venkovní volejbalovou sezónou.

Who did discover electricity? 

To answer this question we need to go to the year 1752. Year 1752 is associated with a man called Benjamin Franklin. That's right. He is the guy who was playing tough and went outside, whilst there was a massive thunderstorm. He used a kite, a metal key. He flew the kite right into the stormy clouds and actually proved that lightning and the tiny electric sparks were the same things. But that was just a beginning. To know more we need to jump to 1800. 

In 1800, an Italian physicist named Alessandro Volta created the very first thing. When his colleagues saw his invention they looked like they just saw god. His battery or voltaic pile produced a steady electric current, and so he was the first person to create a steady flow of electrical charge. Volta also created the first transmission of electricity by linking positively-charged and negatively-charged connectors and driving an electrical charge, or voltage, through them. Franklin must've been quite mad that he did not create the very first battery. So we are slightly advanced in how electricity was invented. But that's not all so don't start celebrating.

Luigi had great interest in biology,

He liked to dissect dead frogs.

He had a very stupid idea,

So he took some copper and zinc rods.

The frog was laying there dead.

Dissected and without a head.

So he started dissecting more,

There was quite a lot of gore.

He placed a dissected leg

Into a dish of salt water.

It was a vicious slaughter,

The frog had no time to beg.

He stuck one rod into its flesh

And accidentally touched the water

With the other rod,

And the leg came back to life.

Mr. Volta then came along,

And ruined this perfect song.

He said: “The leg isn’t alive,

It would need blood to thrive.”

Volta then took this whole concept,

And created a thing called a battery.

Thanks to this, he got a lot of attention, 

Thanks to this extraordinary invention.

As the copper and zinc plates take turns,

They create a positive and negative force.

Because no one knew why,

Someone surely thought it was sci-fi.

‘My idea was taken’ thought Luigi

As the years went by.

‘No one said it was easy’

Croaked the dead frog in frog heaven.

ECP Talent Awards/Ocenění pro talentované studenty ECP

We are giving out the traditional Talent awards to talented students also this year. We have had as many as 20 nominations this year for students talented in art, music and dance, drama or sport. The winners have just been announced. Below you can have a look at some of the works of the awarded students. Well done to them all. We are proud to have so many thriving talents at ECP.

I letos rozdáváme tradiční ocenění za talent talentovaným studentům. Tentokrát jsme obdrželi více než 20 nominací studentů talentovaných v oborech výtvarné umění, hudba a tanec, divadlo nebo sport. Vítězové byli právě oznámeni. Níže se můžete podívat na některé z prací oceněných studentů. Všechny moc chválíme! Jsme hrdí na to, že máme v ECP tolik vzkvétajících talentů.
