Grade 5 Snapshot - Term 4/Week 8-9

Writing

This week students have been finishing off revising and editing their Discussion texts. They have focused on using Persuasive Devices and High Modal Verbs in their writing.  Students were then put into debating groups based off their Discussion texts. They have been planning, rehearsing and some students have started their debates.

Next week students will continue to finish off their debates and start to experiment with the correct use of prefixes and suffixes in their writing. They will also be doing some 'Quick Writes' to develop their fluency and ideas.

Reading

This week students have been working hard to finish their Guided Reading books. They completed a summary of the book and identified the theme and message.

Next week, students will have a focus of vocabulary. They will research the origins of different base words, then add both prefixes and suffixes to spell new words.

Maths

This week students have been learning about data collection and graphing. Next week students will use their creativity, knowledge of angles, lines and area to create a Kandinsky artwork. In addition, students will use the last 3 weeks for revision and conferencing with teachers to discuss any misconceptions, and work through their individual learning needs.

Inquiry

Students have been continuing their learning journey into the transdisciplinary theme: ‘Who We Are’ investigating the central idea that understanding health and wellbeing can promote a balanced lifestyle. This week in UOI, students have been learning about different ways to enhance their psychological wellbeing through gratitude, identity and communication. Students re-discovered important aspects of who they are through the collation of a ‘Me Bag’ containing items which are important to them. The students then created a poster with an image of each item and accompanying text explaining what each item is , why it is important to them and what it says about who they are. Another fantastic activity that students were engaged with this week was the creation of a ‘Family Message Jar’ to enhance their communication skills with their families. These jars were filled with questions or discussion ideas which were randomly drawn at dinner time and discussed around the table. Students have now moved onto physiological wellbeing looking at nutrition and then puberty next week.
