Wednesday Night Basketball Grand Finals

Wednesday 28 October saw the Wednesday Night High School's Basketball Grand Finals take place at the Sportsdome. McCarthy were well represented across many divisions and were very successful on the night. There was some outstanding basketball played and very close results.

In the Year 7 and 8 boy's divisions Peel defeated McCarthy Lakers 33-31, Carinya defeated McCarthy Bullets 37-28 and McCarthy Hawks defeated McCarthy Kings 34-29. In the Year 9/10 boy's division McCarthy Heat defeated Farrer Rangers 37-24. Whilst in the Year 11/12 boy's division McCarthy Phoenix defeated Carinya Thunder 66-38. In the Year 9/10 girl's division McCarthy Diamonds defeated McCarthy Opals 41-38.

Well done to all the players on their efforts throughout the season. A big thank you to the coaches, volunteers  and parents for supporting McCarthy Basketball. It was great to have a strong competition which ran so smoothly by the Tamworth Junior Basketball Association. Finally a huge thank you to Carol Rickard for organising all the teams and Paul Hobson for his ongoing support.

Super 9’s Rugby League Gala Day

On Monday 9 November the Super 9’s Rugby League Gala Day was held at the Plain Street playing fields at Tamworth. After a disrupted year due to COVID-19, it was great to have some inter school sporting competition back and running. It was a very popular and well attended event with schools coming from Walcha, Armidale, Gunnedah, Quirindi and Tamworth. We fielded two teams in the under 16 division, one team made up of Year 9 students and the other made up of students from Year 10. Each team played 4 games. The Year 9 team won all their matches and the Year 10 team drew two games, won one and lost one game. In the Year 9 division the boys won 3 tries to 2 against Quirindi High School; won 4 tries to 3 against Tamworth High School; defeated Walcha High School 2 tries to 1; and defeated Peel High School by 3 tries to 2.

The boys combined really well as a team and all games were played at good speed and intensity. Standout players included Sebastian Lawler who was a handful for the defence with his robust running and strong tackling. Bradyn Hamilton had a great game, as did Cameron Smith who scored a couple of great tries. Dustin Kelly, Brock Turner and Adam Refalo were also outstanding. The Year 10 team were extremely competitive with their only loss being a 4 tries to 2 defeat by a very strong Farrer team. The year 10 team won their first game 3 tries to 2 against Oxley High School whilst they had two draws against Armidale and Peel High School. The year 10 team played with plenty of enthusiasm and commitment. There were a number of standout performances including Tom Rickard who proved to be almost unstoppable with his strong charges. Tyler Swift and James Feguson added some speed and class to the backline with a number of incisive runs. William Michie, whilst not big in stature, proved to be a very tough and durable player,  he made a number of good runs and was punishing in defence. Rowan O’Rielly and Ryan Lowe were also key contributors to the team. The teams were:
