City Experience
Year 9
Throughout last week, Year 9 students engaged in the City Experience program. Students participated in a number of activities exploring Melbourne city and what it has to offer. Students took an in-depth look at issues beyond the classroom and learned about homelessness and social enterprises. They had the opportunity to explore food, fashion, sport and culture within Melbourne and how each of these make our City truly unique.
Students travelled on Public Transport to, and from, the City each day and it was great to see the students build responsibility and confidence, with students becoming more independent by the end of the week.
A particular highlight was the level of maturity and excellent representation of the college throughout the week.

Last week we had city experience for year 9s, it was a very fun week doing all different activities and learning new things. All the activities were very enjoyable but some of my favourite things would have to have been going in the MCG as we got to see all the different areas and rooms in there that I had never been in before (and will most likely never go in them again.) I also really enjoyed Old Melbourne Gaol because we learned a lot about what it was like in there and it was really interesting going in the original rooms. Lastly, I really enjoyed ‘The intersection’ because we got an insight into some of the lives of people that find themselves homeless. As a new student to the school this term, it was not only educational, it was a lot of fun and a great way to form new friendships.

Year 9 Week 5 Term 2 City Experience was a fun week I really enjoyed visiting the shrine of remembrance as it showed us the history of world wars and more, the tram rides were fun, you could take it for easy transport and on cold days it was a way to stay warm whilst you’re traveling. At lunch there were multiple shops to buy things to eat or drink which was nice, as having a delicious meal after going around the city doing enjoyable activities was really refreshing and relaxing. Taking the trains to the city really helped boost confidence and independence especially if it is hard to travel in big, crowded areas, like myself. Overall city experience is an opportunity to not only strengthen independence but to familiarise yourself with the city.

Hi my name is Keyon and I recently got the opportunity to experience the city first hand as part of a school excursion. My first thoughts of the experience I felt confronted and worried about the whole concept of us having to get ourselves places but my favorite thing about the whole thing was the independence and us being responsible for ourselves and holding ourselves accountable. All in all the city experience was an amazing success it taught us how to show respect to the public and get around by ourselves and if you have the opportunity to go on it I highly recommend.
