Year 5 Report

Term 2 2023

Well done to all Grade 5 students on what has been a busy but successful Term 2!

The students did an amazing job representing our school at the Winter Sports Gala Day. The students demonstrated both their sporting ability and their strong interpersonal and team work skills. We also got to celebrate our Writer's Festival this term. The students put in a lot of hard work creating writing pieces that they were very proud to share with you all. Thanks to those who came and shared the afternoon with us and obviously 5A had the best room decorations in the building😉

We hope you all have a restful holiday period and we look forward to seeing you all for another fun term in Term 3!

Reading

In reading this term, we looked at skills good readers use to help them understand what they are reading and share their understanding with others. Students practised being able to summarise what they had read being sure to include all of the important information but still keeping it short. They also worked on making connections between texts, synthesising new information and critiquing the choices the author had made when creating the text.

Writing

Our writing topic this term has been Realistic Narratives. Students worked through the process of writing; planning, drafting, editing and publishing, writing about topics of interest to them. They put in a lot of work perfecting their pieces, ready for The Writer's Festival. Students showed great improvement in their word choice and use of dialogue throughout their texts. We also worked with 1/2 students to help them get their writing published and ready to go. The students showed great patience and worked really hard with the 1/2's to ensure their writing was the best it could be.

Maths

This Term our major focus has been Addition and Subtraction. Students learned a variety of strategies including the Take and Give strategy, Breaking One Addend Apart and Starting From the Left to Subtract. They then worked on identifying which strategy would be the most efficient to use depending on the problem they were given. We also used our addition skills to help us with finding the perimeter of a variety of different shapes. Students are finishing the term off working on Transformations, Symmetry and Angles.

Inquiry

The Grade 5 Inquiry topic for Term 3 has been Australian Colonies and Early Life in Australia. Students have focused on the life of convicts, The Gold Rush, The Eureka Stockade and Australian Bushrangers. We have developed a strong understanding of what life was like for people in the early years of colonization and how some of the major events that occurred back then helped to shape our nation as we know it today.

Reminders

  • School starts at 8.50. We have a high number of students arriving to school late each day. Ten minutes late each day is 50 minutes of missed learning a week. That's an entire session of learning!
  • Homework. The expectation is that all students read for half an hour each night and record this in their diaries for the teacher to monitor. Students who have been reading have shown great growth in all areas of their learning. Half an hour each night really does make a difference!
  • Maths Survivor Day. Maths survivor day is happening on the last day of term, June 23rd. Maths survivor day is a fun day where students get to use their maths knowledge to complete a number of different challenges in the hopes of being the ultimate maths survivor! Make sure you are there on the day to join in the fun!
  • 5/6 Camp. Full payments for Camp are due on the 14th of July, students who have paid for Camp will receive a Medical Form to complete next term.
