Becoming an independent learner

During Term 1 and 2 I have had the pleasure of working with the Year 11 and 12 students on what it is to be an independent learner. This has required our students to be honest and open with themselves about where they are now on their learning journey and more importantly, where it is they would like to be. We have talked about the importance of self-reflection, taking responsibility for their actions, the value of feedback and shouting down their inner critique. It is very important that all our students are reminded that when they are trying something new, that change takes time and is not always easy.

The VCE students have been introduced to the three stages of learning and how these stages dovetail with their memory processes. The wellbeing mentors and I have enjoyed working with them as they have reflected upon their individual strengths and weaknesses. In conversation with the students, we have been able to ask them to explain their thinking and provide evidence that support these reflections.

Year 10 and 11 Exams

Our Year 10 and 11 students have already started thinking about the Semester 1 examinations. These will be held in Week 7 with the timetable and instructions circulated shortly. Semester examinations are an important part of the learning process, preparing students to become assessment ready for the VCAA examinations in their final year. Students will be supported in studying for the examinations, with specific strategies from their teachers, but most important is the feedback that they receive and the way that each student applies the changes that will strengthen their learning.
