World Oceans Day 2023 - Thursday 8th June 2023

When is World Oceans Day 2023?

World Oceans Day 2023 (also known as World Ocean Day) is going to be celebrated on Thursday the 8th of June. It’s a day for people all around the world to celebrate and honour our oceans.

In support of this important day, world leaders have pledged to protect at least 30% of our blue planet, creating a healthy ocean and climate by 2030 (30x30).

Returning our oceans to a healthy state is a critical part of the solution to the climate crisis. Through education and action, we can protect our planet’s life support systems, such as the ocean, climate, and biodiversity.

The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth.

The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, it is home to most of earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. Not to mention, the ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030.

Despite its many benefits, the ocean is now in need of support.

With 90% of big fish populations depleted, and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. We need to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer depletes its bounty but instead restores its vibrancy and brings it new life.

“Planet Ocean: tides are changing”, is the theme for World Oceans Day 2023 - the UN is joining forces with decision-makers, indigenous leaders, scientists, private sector executives, civil society, celebrities, and youth activist to put the ocean first.

How did World Oceans Day begin?

It was originally proposed by Canada at the Earth Summit in 1992. The idea was taken by 'The Ocean Project' which began organising events and fundraising campaigns to promote and coordinate ocean protection efforts.

Five reasons we should recognise World Oceans Day 2023

There are lots of reasons why we should get involved this World Oceans Day. Here are five World Ocean Day facts:

  1. Our oceans generate a lot of the oxygen we breathe, so we need to keep them clean.
  2. A significant amount of the food eaten around the world comes from the sea, such as fish and crustaceans.
  3. The oceans help to regulate climate.
  4. Sea fishing provides work for thousands of people.
  5. Our oceans are a source of renewable energy.

How will World Oceans Day 2023 be celebrated?

World Oceans Day has grown into a massive event over the last three decades. It draws people from all over the world to play their part in protecting the great blue that surrounds us.

Organisations such as the World Ocean Day Youth Advisory Council organise events and distribute fundraising materials.
