Assistant Principal's report

Mrs Lauren Hopkins

Updated Reporting Format

Our teaching staff are hard at work in every spare minute at the moment preparing end of Semester Reports for students. This year we have reviewed and updated our reporting format to create a more in depth and ongoing picture of your child's learning.

The report format will look similar in some ways, in that your child will receive a graph with a 'dot' to show their progress towards, at or beyond expected level in Literacy and Numeracy. The report will contain a detailed written comment about your child's semester, a Learning Behaviours checklist, and achievement checklists in the Specialist subject areas.

The new part of our reporting cycle is the use of Compass Continuum. This will be a companion to the published reports and is where you can view your child's achievements against the Victorian Curriculum, as well as see the next steps they will take as they progress along the Curriculum. This Continuum will be updated over time and form a thorough ongoing picture of your child's progress. This change is made with consistency of parent, child and teacher understanding of progress in mind as your child moves through their years at Kalinda.

The snapshot example below shows you the continuum of a Grade 2 child. This child is marked as 'working towards' achieving Level 2 Measurement, with some curriculum outcomes marked complete (the green tick) and some still consolidating (the blue arrows). The overall heading is orange, signifying that this student has not yet achieved the end of Level 2 curriculum in Measurement. (Therefore, they are at expected level for end of Semester 1 in Grade 2).

Conversely, this student is considered to have progressed to the end of the Level 2 curriculum in Statistics and Probability. The outcomes are all marked complete (green ticks) and the overall heading is green. This student is now ready to move into a Level 3 curriculum in Statistics and Probability.

It will no doubt take our community some time to become familiar with the format, although our recent use of curriculum checklists will make many aspects of the format familiar for parents. We are confident that this will be a comprehensive and informative method of reporting moving forward, with a focus on individualised reporting of progress and next steps.

Some new faces...

It gives me great pleasure to welcome these wonderful new staff members:

Jess Crea - Interim Canteen Manager

Hello everyone, I am Jess, and I am delighted to be helping out in the canteen until Justine’s return to Kalinda. In the meantime, we will have ‘Jess’ Jolly Kitchen’. The kitchen will be open for orders Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays come term 3. For the remainder of term 2, you can order food on a Friday only with a limited menu (unless notified of extra days). Moving forward into term 3 I will be offering a healthy menu on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Friday being the ‘treat’ day for the students!

Please feel free to come and say hello or even lend a hand in the kitchen. The requirements for volunteering in the canteen have changed slightly. You will need a WWCC and Food Handlers Certificate. The link for the Food handling certificate is; Home - DoFoodSafely (health.vic.gov.au)

Julia Robertson - Grade 3 teacher assistant

Hello Kalinda Primary community,

My name is Julia Robertson, and I am writing to introduce myself as the Grade 3 teacher assistant. I am currently studying my final year of a Bachelor of Primary and Secondary Education at Monash University. My role in the Grade 3 classroom is to offer additional support to teachers and provide individualised attention to students who may need further guidance.

When I’m not at school or university, I enjoy baking at home, riding my bike (if weather permits) and spending time with family and friends.

My first term at Kalinda has already flown by and the Kalinda community has been beyond supportive and welcoming! I’m excited for the year ahead and to be a part of such an amazing school community.

Julia

Take care Kalinda, you are very important to me.
