News from JLC

Maths, R U OK Day and welcoming Miss Attrill

During Maths over the last two weeks, JLC has been studying ‘Data and Graphing’.  The children learnt that data is information which is collected to help us find out about the world around us. They learnt that once data is collected through surveys, or interviews the information presented can be sorted in different ways depending on what information we are looking for.  The children learnt that graphs are used to represent data as they make it easy to see and understand information.  In the classroom, we used Pictographs and Column graphs to show the information we collected. The children learnt about basic two-dimensional graphs consisting of a vertical and a horizontal line that intersects at a point called origin. They learnt that the horizontal line is the x axis and the vertical line is the y axis. The children were also able to look closely at a graph and answer questions about the data presented.

Recently, we were encouraged to reach out to others during RU OK day.  RU OK?  Is a suicide prevention charity in Australia, encouraging all of us to notice the signs of mental health struggle in friends, family, and colleagues.  The purpose of the day was to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with the people around them and to start a conversation with those who may be struggling with life.  A clear message being that you don’t need to be an expert to reach out to people. You just need to be a good friend and a good listener.  It was lovely to receive emails and texts from our school community asking us about our wellbeing and whether we were OK during this very trying time. We greatly appreciated the sweet treats we received at school and the messages of support and encouragement.  Thanks Again!

In JLC recently, we were very fortunate to have Alexandra Attrill with us.  Alex is a pre- service teacher studying her Master of Primary Teaching at the Australian Catholic University. Alex has just completed her last round of teaching practice.  While she was with us, during our writing lessons she taught the genre of Narrative focusing on Fairy Tales.  She covered  the areas of Title, Orientation, Complication and Resolution.  The children then had a go at writing their very own fairy tale, putting into practice what they had learnt.  During Maths, Alex covered the areas of Money and Data and Graphing. The children really enjoyed playing the pre Maths game called ‘Greedy Pig’. To play this game they needed an ordinary 6-sided die.

This activity provided students with a fun game allowing them to practice their addition and subtraction skills and introduced them to the concept of probability.

We hope you all have a well deserved break and see you all back next term.

Kind regards
