OSHClub

What we’ve been up to at OSHC!

It’s been a little quieter than usual here at OSHClub due the recent lockdown, however, we’ve had an amazing time creating fabulous activities for children and families to do at home and in service!

OSHC at Home

Staying connected with families within the community, the team at St James OSHClub decided to start our own OSHC at home! We absolutely love our afternoon clubs here at St James OSHClub, so each afternoon we have been sending out will some activity ideas from our art, sports, cooking, sustainability and coding clubs.

This week we read Florette by Anna Walker for Book Week, got fit and active as we played sock basketball, regrew spring onions and got messy in the Kitchen with Laura and Lidia!

If you’d like to have a look at some great activity ideas for your family during lockdown, please feel free to check out all our recorded club ideas and videos here!

We hope you love bringing a little bit of OSHC home with you!

OSHC in Service

We’ve also continued to provide some high-quality experiences for children in service as we’ve cooked up a storm in the OSHC kitchens and enjoyed the beautiful spring weather.

Developing an understanding of proportionality and measurement, Lidia has absolutely loved baking some delicious choc chip pancakes, rice paper rolls and super sweet vanilla cupcakes. Lidia has also made connections to her mathematics learning as she created ABC patterns with her fruit kebabs for breakfast. What a superstar learner!

The children have also loved exploring our natural environment and enjoying some of the spring sunshine. Lidia has really liked bringing our board game battles to the outdoors, continuing to outsmart Laura in our connect four challenges!

Iris has been building upon her fundamental movement skills as she challenged herself to race in some awesome time trials using stilts. She’s almost a professional now!

In the craft corner, Lidia decided that she’d battle it out with Laura in our unicorn colouring competition. Developing her sense of commitment and enthusiasm, Lidia arose victorious, with Mr Flanagan crowning Lidia with the colouring champion. Laura was obviously robbed of her moment to shine!

Family Tree

Recently at OSHC, we’ve been working on the creation of our OSHClub family tree. Charlie in Grade 1 has helped to paint the sign for this area and has been the first family to join our tree. We hope to use this space as an area to celebrate the different cultures and families that make up the OSHC community at St James.

If you currently attend OSHC, we would greatly appreciate if you could send through a family photo so that we can build our tree!

Our amazing staff: Welcome Kaitlyn

We are very pleased to introduce our new educator at St James OSHClub. Kaitlyn is an amazing educator and we are excited for her to begin developing some strong relationships with the school community.

A little from Kaitlyn:

Hello! My name is Kaitlyn Bryson, I am an arts student at the University of Melbourne and next year I begin my Master of Teaching. Last year I spent some time volunteering at another school and had a wonderful time and am so excited to start my journey here at St James. I came to Melbourne from country South Australia and grew up on a small farm, surrounded by lots of animals and younger siblings. When I am not here at OSHClub you can find me either exploring the city by running or reading a book in the park.

Spotlight on the Community: ADHD Awareness Month

This week we are sharing some information from ADHD awareness month. ADHD Awareness Month is a 31-day period of time, annually occurring for the month of October, which is dedicated to raising awareness of and educating the public about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. In raising awareness, the event aims to dismantle any harmful stereotypes or misinformation, and spread reliable key facts and information based on scientific evidence and peer-reviewed research.

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that causes higher than average levels of hyperactive, impulsive and inattentive behaviour. The term ‘neurodevelopmental’ might simply means that some individuals’ brains develop differently from neurotypical individuals (‘neurotypical’ meaning that they don’t display characteristics of autistic or any other neurodiverse patterns of thought and behaviour).

People with ADHD tend to have trouble focusing their attention on a single task or sitting still for long periods of time.

There are 3 different types of ADHD. These are:

  • Primarily Hyperactive and Impulsive ADHD: Hyperactive and Impulsive ADHD is the most commonly recognised type of ADHD. Children with this type of ADHD may find it hard to stay sat still, with an impulse to move around or talk continuously.
  • Primarily Inattentive ADHD: Previously termed Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), a person with Inattentive ADHD is more likely to just display signs of distractibility and seemingly unmotivated behaviour.
  • Combined Type ADHD: A person with this type of ADHD will show signs of both hyperactive and inattentive behaviour.

We love feedback!

As part of our commitment to ongoing quality improvement within the program, we are seeking feedback from families and communities!

This week we are focusing on Quality Area 2 of the National Quality Standard: Children’s Health and Safety.

What are we working on?

A meaningful approach to healthy eating is promoted within our weekly menus and aligns with relevant governing guidelines (NQS 2.1.3).

Question:

What would you like to see the service include in our menus? (NQS 2.1.3).

In relation to your child’s dietary needs, what’s important to you? (NQS 2.1.3).

We would love your feedback and insight. Please follow the link to provide us with some feedback in this area!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:

Please note, due to current COVID-19 restrictions, parents, families and caregivers must check in with the QR code located at our entrance before entering the building. When you have arrived with your child for pick up or drop off, please ensure you are wearing a mask
