Year 5/6 Term Overview

Welcome to Term 4!

We’d like to welcome back all of our wonderful 5/6 students and families for this term. We are so excited to be working towards coming back onsite, working face-to-face with all of you. Remote learning continues to be a very rewarding experience and we have been impressed by the hard work and flexibility of all of our students.

Term 4 will be a busy term of leadership and learning. Our Year 6 students will achieve an important milestone by finishing their seven years of primary education and will be thinking about their next chapter: secondary schooling.

Our curriculum outline for 5/6 is below, detailing learning for reading, writing, math, and social learning:

Reading

In reading for this term, students will be furthering their understanding and knowledge of reading by focussing on analysing and critiquing, summarising, visualising and asking and analysing questions. They will engage with a variety of texts to analyse how authors use figurative language including metaphors, similes and personification to provide a new perspective of looking at the world and are used to create mood. They will analyse word choice by the writer, with a focus on vocabulary that is used to express greater precision in order to create visual images in a reader’s mind. They will independently choose comprehension strategies to support 'thinking about reading' and record their thinking.

Writing

Our students will be engaging with poetry, procedural and explanation writing this term. We will have a strong focus on the writer’s traits of Voice, Sentence Fluency, Presentation and Conventions.  Through explicit teaching of these concepts and engaging in the writing process, and using peer and teacher led conferences to aide revising and editing, their drafts will lead to published pieces. We are linking our writing to Inquiry later the term by writing an explanation for our research and results for our inquiry project.

Math

For math we will be targeting multiplicative and fractional thinking, angles, measurement and shape. Students will be expanding their understanding of number as the basis for all mathematical understanding and will engage in researching various 2D shapes and angles, noting their properties, designing and creating solutions to problems related to volume, capacity, and mass, and exploring 3D shapes and their nets.

Social and Emotional Learning

During social learning for term 4, we will learn about the value in positive thinking, building grit and resilience and collaborative attitudes and skills. We will be also assisting our students with transitioning into years 6 and 7 respectively.

As always, if you have any questions, please contact us.
