Year 4 Term Overview

Nǐ hǎo (hello) Parents/Carers,

Womenjeka (Welcome) to Term 4! Term 4 has started off with students showing great resilience skills by settling into online learning routines very quickly, and we are always delighted to have them back.

Week 1, saw us transitioning slowly back into live teaching after everyone’s much deserved term break.

This term we will continue our specialist focus areas, which are - PE, Visual Art, Performing Art, Mandarin, Science and Kitchen Garden.

During Literacy this term, we will be immersing ourselves in Procedural and Explanatory Writing.  Within the Reading lessons, we will develop our understanding within these writing styles through both the language and text features, identifying the purpose and audience of these texts, comprehension, discovering new vocabulary and how the author includes these to keeps us interested in the text. Writing, we will continue developing knowledge around 6 + 1 Traits of Writing with a particular focus on Word choice, Organisation, Conventions, and Presentation. Students will discover the text structure to help support the creation of their own procedural and explanatory piece through the plan, draft, edit, revise and publish stages.

During Mathematics, we will be learning about Chance and Data, Financial Maths, Decimal Place Value and Additive Thinking, Length, Mass, Temperature, Shape & Geometric Reasoning and Location and Transformation. All areas of Mathematics will have a focus of problem solving where students will use a range of problem-solving strategies. Multiplicative Thinking is a focus that we will be showing and developing the students range of strategies that support the fluency with multiplication facts.

Inquiry is a fantastic time for all as students become critical thinkers. During this term, students will be focussing on Science and Design Tech and “How the world works”. Throughout the term, students are discovering and investigating the ways in which science understanding can influence their own and other’s actions in a sustainable and innovative way. Throughout Science and Design Tech, we will be investigating our driving question, ‘How can designers and engineers choose the appropriate materials to have the least impact on the environment?’.
