Prep Term Overview

To all our wonderful Prep families,

Welcome to Term 4 and back to the classroom!

Reading

In Reading, we are exploring how authors have different ideas that are expressed through words and pictures. We will be focusing on how we sound out words as we read to develop the skill of solving new words. We are also focusing on rereading for meaning and noticing punctuation to add expression to our reading. Finally, we will look at comprehension strategies such as inferring (how a character is feeling in a text and why they might be feeling that way).

Writing

In writing, we will be using interesting words and punctuation to develop our sentences. We will explore the authors' writing choices through narrative and poetry texts to develop our own ideas, and use them as inspiration to build our sentences into short stories. Further, we will continue to record our ideas using pictures, letters and words to share them with others. Through the SMART Spelling program, we will develop an understanding of digraphs such as ‘ar’, ‘sh’, ‘ch’ and ‘ck’ and will experiment with using these spelling choices in our writing.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we will continue to develop our understanding of patterns in the environment, as well as creating and extending our own patterns. We will also be focusing on modelling addition, subtraction and sharing problems using maths manipulatives and developing our number sense of numbers 0-20. We will connect the days of the week to familiar events as well as order the duration of these events using everyday language of time. Further, we will use appropriate language, such as longer, heavier or holds more, to explain an object's length and capacity. Finally, we will represent everyday financial situations involving money through shop play to develop our understanding of goods and services.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, we will be focusing on light and sound. We will be exploring how we can use our senses to investigate light and sound. We will also look at how light and sound can be produced and sourced, and explore this by looking at natural and man made light and sound. For example, through shadows, light boxes, instruments and pitches.

Social and Emotional Learning

In Social and Emotional Learning, we will be focusing on practising the school rules of being Safe, Respectful and Striving for Excellence. We will be identifying and exploring our personal strengths and how we can use them to help others. We will also be looking at how we express emotions and use words and actions to describe how we feel. We will learn about and practise strategies to support self regulation and how our emotions can change.

Discovery

In Discovery, we will be investigating many different learning stations such as numeracy, literacy, construction, art and craft, science and nature, dramatic play, tinkering and sensory. Here we will practise how to collaborate with peers, problem solve, take risks, be creative and become resilient learners.

Goals and achievements

New goals and achievements will be updated on COMPASS in Weeks 3, 6 and 9. Strategies you can implement at home will also be included, so that you can best support your child in their learning at both school and home. Students’ reading excellence hub goals will be uploaded to Seesaw.

Kind Regards, Prep Teachers
